  • Palmarosa-A Grassy Surprise

Seemingly just a pretty grass, Palmarosa comes as a surprisingly healing grassy bush. The plant is valued both for its herb and oil. Palmarosa Cymbopogon martinii var. motia or martini is part of the plant family Poaceae (Gramineae). The essential oil is distilled from the leaves of the plant. The key constituents (chemical components within the oil) are geraniol at typically 74.5-81.0%, geranyl acetate 0.5-10.7%, (EZ)-farnesol 0.5-6.1%, linalool at 2.6-4.5% and then various other components with lower percentages. The total makeup, even the minor constituents, play a part in the overall therapeutic action of the oil. There is a low risk of skin sensitization. In the 2nd Edition of Essential Oil Safety book by Robert Tisserand, based on a maximum of 81% content of the chemical component Geraniol, recommends the maximum adult recommendation of 6.5%. The components and percentages of oils can be found on the GC/MS analysis reports and are important in choosing an oil. This is especially important with Palmarosa since this may dictate the maximum safety zone to avoid irritation. That said, i you're unsure of the percentages of geraniol within the oil, Tisserand recommends the following maximum dilution rates to avoid irritation to the skin: no use prior to 3 months old, for ages 3-24 months old, maximum of 0.5%; for 2-6 years old, 2%; 6-15 years old, maximum of 3%; 15 years old and over, maximum of 5% and those pregnant, no more than 2%. 9 drops of essential oil to 30 ml (one ounce) of carrier oil would be equivalent to 1%. *For further resources, safety information, classes and more, you can visit Dr. Robert Tisserand’s website at https://tisserandinstitute.org/.* Because of the effects of citral and geraniol in that they inhibit CYP2B6 drugs, there is a theoretical risk with Palmarosa for those that take these drugs if using this oil orally. We do not recommend this with any oil without consulting one trained in the ingestion of essential oils. (1) Palmarosa is often adulterated with its close relative the Ginger grass plant. Salvatore Battaglia stated, “Turpentine and citronella oil are often used with synthetic geraniol to adulterate Palmarosa. Palmarosa oil itself is often used as a cheap substitute for rose and geranium oils.”(2) This adulteration would be detected by the afore mentioned analysis report. My recommendation is to go with a company that has the GC/MS report from an outside testing lab upfront on their website readily available to the consumer prior to purchasing the oil. Some of the more common uses for Palmarosa essential oil are as an anti-depressant, anti-fungal, anti-microbial, antiseptic, anti-viral, cicatrisant (skin healer), digestive aide, febrifuge (fever reducer), insect repellant and as a neurotonic. Let’s see how to put this remarkable oil to work. Bacteria Palmarosa, due to the high percentage of geraniol, has been shown through research to be powerful against most germs (bactericidal-large spectrum), including Escherichia (E.coli). It’s effective against E Coli by modulating or supporting the effectiveness of Penicillin. In referenced study under table 2 the compound geraniol can be found, which is the major component found within the oil and responsible for this action. And under table 3, you will find it effective against the common gut bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae. This bacteria lives within the gut but once outside the gut, it can cause severe infections, especially those with a weakened immune system or have recently been sick. Geraniol supports Tetracycline in the treatment of these infections. (3) Candida Yeast Infections Candida is a type of fungal infection that normally lives in the mouth, throat, and the rest of the digestive tract without causing any problems. Occasionally Candida can multiply and cause an infection if the environment inside the mouth, throat, or esophagus changes in a way that prompts its growth. This can happen when a person’s immune system becomes weakened, if antibiotics affect the natural balance of microbes in the body, or for a variety of other reasons such as those with HIV, Diabetes or other health issue that effects the immune system. Palmarosa has been noted as an excellent oil for fungal infections. For vaginal use, vaginal pessaries can be made and allow a calibrated dose of carrier and essential oils to ease many symptoms including infections, dryness and irritation. However, my recommendation is to first speak to your physician to ensure that your infection has not developed from something more serious. Unless you are trained in calibrating and dosing for internal use, I suggest seeking out a Qualified Clinical Aromatherapist for internal treatment, including suppositories. You can check at https://naha.org/about/boards-committees/naha-directors/ for a Clinical Aromatherapist near you. Easing Digestive Tract Infections If you suspect you have a digestive infection, seek advice from your physician. Treating digestion is one thing but any suspected “infection” should be addressed. Although topical use is effective and moreso for isolated aches and pains, not enough components absorb through the layers of skin and in fact, only certain components do absorb through the skin. Theoretically, some components such as camphene and a-pinene do absorb through the skin making their way to the bloodstream. However, not enough is absorbed through the skin to ease internal issues. That said, as we use them topically, we are also inhaling them, which is the most effective way to use your oils for internal issues such as digestive upsets. This is most likely why people think the oil in whole is being absorbed through the skin, which is virtually impossible since, as stated, most molecules in essential oils are too large to absorb through the epidermis (outermost layer of skin) and dermis (innermost layer of the skin). Depending on where you apply, the epidermis can have up to 4-5 layers. To increase topical absorption, apply to clean, warm skin which is more receptive to absorption. Heart Palpitations If you are experiencing heart palpitations, you may want to visit your physician to ensure it is not a serious health issue. If you find this is due to stress, anxiety or other emotional triggers, Palmarosa can help calm you. Inhalation is best in these situations because of its almost instant effect. You can also make a chest rub to help remain calm as needed. Try the following in your inhaler or add to 1 ounce of unscented lotion or carrier oil for a 2% blend. Use on chest, neck and wrists. 5 drops Palmarosa Cymbopogon martinii var. motia 4 drops Bergamot Citrus bergamia 2 drops Ylang Ylang Cananga odorata 3 drops Roman Chamomile Chamaemelum nobile Immune System Support Aromatics such as Palmarosa can help budge the immune system. The mind and immune system are connected and is referred to as Psychoneuroimmunology or PNI. When chronic stress, childhood trauma, grief occurs, it can weaken the immune system. Palmarosa has a calming yet uplifting effect on the central nervous system. It can calm nervous exhaustion, easing fatigue and irritability. The therapeutic properties of Palmarosa as an antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory contribute to its immune support. When dealing with an immune system issue, along with aromatic support, we recommend a healthy diet, exercise and plenty of hydration to support and maintain an overall healthier immune system. Adding fresh herbs to your diet is extra protection and support. You can do this by adding to your meals or adding herbs to fresh water, leaving it over night to infuse your water. This is a fresh and healthy change to plain water. When you feel not quite right and need extra support for your immune system, try the following blend. Manuka has the power of Tea tree Melaleuca alternifolia without the medicinal smell. You’ll find it to be soft, somewhat honey aroma. Manuka nor Helichrysum has no known safety concerns. 5 drops Palmarosa Cymbopogon martinii var. motia 5 Manuka Leptospermum scoparium 5 drops Helichrysum Helichrysum italicum Indigestion Symptom Relief Palmarosa is a grassy herb that has been used for centuries as a tonic to ease digestive issues. It helps ease internal bacterial as well as viral infections. Palmarosa essential oil is gentle and can be used internally. Although gentle, any essential oil can irritate the mucous membranes if caution is not taken. I recommend consulting a Clinical Aromatherapist trained in dosage, duration of necessary time as well as the proper delivery system (capsules, honey or other safe appropriate method of internal use) to ensure safety. You can also make a blend to use topically and gently massage to ease symptoms. That said, one of my favorites ways is to add warm steamy water to a heat safe dish. Add no more than 3-5 drops of Palmarosa oil in the water. Close your eyes and cover your head and bowel with a small towel, allowing the steam to stay within your “steam tent” and then take deep breaths. Continue to breath in and let the coolness of Palmarosa ease your tummy discomfort. Once the water stops steaming, you can uncover and allow what steam is left to go into the air. This can be used in your diffuser as well. Mosquito Repellent Palmarosa not adds an extra protection against bugs, it’s cooling effect adds to comfort in the summer heat. Try the following to keep mosquitoes and more at bay during the heat of summer. 1-ounce carrier oil or unscented lotion 5 drops Palmarosa Cymbopogon martinii var. motia 5 drops Patchouli Pogostemom cablin 5 drops Vanilla Oleoresin Vanilla plantifolia 5 drops Cedarwood Juniperus virginiana 2 Drops Lemon Eucalyptus Citriodora (Lemon) Nervous Tension One of the clinical applications of Palmarosa is calming the central nervous system. It eases anxiety while at the same time being emotionally uplifting and calming to the mind. Palmarosa is a grassy herb. Herbs are either Adaptogens or Nervines. Nervines specifically help to support the nervous system where as Adaptogens help us to manage or “adapt” to stress as we’re faced with it. Because of Palmarosa’s clinical actions of protecting and helping to support the nervous system, it is considered a nervine. Dilute and apply topically or use in in inhaler. 5 drops Palmarosa Cymbopogon martinii var. motia 5 drops Clary Sage Salvea sclarea 3 drops Rose Geranium Pelargonium roseum x asperum 2 drops Grapefruit Citrus Paradisi Reducing Fevers (Febrifuge) Palmarosa is amongst a few oils that help to reduce fevers (febrifuge). They are cooling to the body and help to reduce the body temperature. Dilute with an unscented lotion or carrier oil accordingly. Along with Palmarosa, if you want to use other oils that have febrifuge properties, you could try Bergamot, Black Pepper, Eucalyptus citriodora (lemon), Roman or German chamomile, Cypress, Lemon, Ginger, Patchouli or even Spearmint. Peppermint works well also, although I recommend blend very low to avoid injury. My favorite fever reducer includes the following. 1-ounce unscented lotion or carrier oil 7 drops Palmarosa Cymbopogon martinii var. motia 5 drops Patchouli Pogostemon cablin 5 drops Spearmint Mentha spicata Relieve Anxiety The two chemical components that dominate Palmarosa, linalool (linalol) and geraniol are both known for their anxiolytic (relieve anxiety) actions. Using the previous blend is perfect for anxiety as well. Use per instructions. (4) Anti-Spasmatic Actions Palmarosa therapeutic actions as an anti-spasmodic make it an excellent oil to relax the smooth muscles of the body. The smooth muscles are found in the walls of hollow organs like your intestines and stomach. Many times, I see the word "anti-spasmodic" being misinterpreted. This does not translate to all muscles within the body, only the involuntary muscles. The muscles that are under your conscious control are called voluntary muscles, while muscles that are not under your conscious control are called involuntary muscles. These muscles called the smooth muscles include but not limited to the muscles in the esophagus, stomach, intestines as well as the blood vessels. The three types of muscles in the body include skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle. (5) Smooth muscles are involved in several other functions of the body including the muscular walls of your intestines that contract to “push” food through your body, the smooth muscles of the bladder wall that contract to expel urine from your body and the smooth muscles in a woman's uterus (or womb) that helps to “push” the baby out during birthing. But there are times these smooth muscles can over function, tense up and cause tummy cramps and tightness. While Palmarosa calms the smooth muscles, inhalation is occurring which also calms and relaxes our mental and emotional state. This helps to release tension and anxiety contributing to relaxing muscle spasms. You could use the nervous tension blend for this as well. Blend at a 2-3% and gently massage your abdominal area to calm and relax your muscles and as you breathe in, you’ll relax your mind as well. *No essential oil, including Palmarosa, should be added to bath water without proper dilution steps. To learn more, visit Tisserand Institute at https://tisserandinstitute.org/safety/bath-safety/.* Psoriasis and Eczema Palmarosa helps to balance the skin’s sebum production and works as a stimulant in cell regeneration. It’s been noted to ease dermatitis, eczema and smooth skin wrinkles. For a carrier oil, I would suggest Almond oil, known as Sweet Almond, a cold pressed, and then subsequently refined mixed with a soft Shea stearine. It helps to protect the moisture of the skin. (6) Almond oil contains minerals and vitamins including A, B1, B2, B6 and Vitamin E. Sweet Almond is an emollient and has sclerosant properties. Based on research, it’s shown to ease itching from dry skin, smooth and rejuvenate the skin, as well as treat psoriasis and eczema. (7) Almond is especially effective on dry, aging skin. Try in the following recipe: Skin Healing Oil One-Ounce Sweet Almond Oil 6 drops Carrot seed oil 3 drops Bergamot Citrus bergamia 6 drops Palmarosa Cymbopogon martini var. motia 6 drops Cedarwood Juniperus virginiana 3 drops Ho Wood Cinnamomun camphora ct linalol Directions: Blend and apply as needed. Relieving Acne Acne Staphylococcus infection, or "staph," is caused by bacteria on the skin or in the nose. Staph severity can range from minor skin problems (in this case, the inflamed acne) to serious heart problems. Palmarosa is a strong anti-bacterial and antimicrobial that can help address the skin issues. Note: If you suspect a staph infection, always consult your physician prior to use. Palmarosa is safe to use along with anti-bacterial medications. (8) Combined with a carrier oil with similar therapeutic actions, a healthy diet and plenty of hydration, you can assist in getting acne under control. I also like blending it with another superpower against acne and that is Manuka Leptospermum scoparium, a great replacement for another great bacterial fighter but is a bit too medicinal in aroma for me and that is Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia. Depending on your age and if you are pregnant, you can use both Palmarosa and Manuka at a 2-5% dilution rate with 5% for the isolated areas such as acne. Urinary Tract Infections Urinary tract infections are bacterial and can be painful and may be caused by a more serious issue. Once addressed accordingly, you can consider a Sitz bath to ease symptoms. A Sitz bath, from the German word ‘zitzen’, meaning to sit, is often referred to as a hip bath. In the mid 1850’s, a sitz tub was used. The tubs were made of tin and was lined in “linen damask, think bird’s eye diaper, or white huckaback” towels to protect the skin from the tin’s heat. The water was warmed by the tub. Bathing experts recommended vigorous toweling after the bath to promote blood circulation and to remove dry skin. Although created for medical purposes, people found that they really enjoyed it as well. Although to date there is no evidence that a warm bath will ease pain and discomfort, personal experience speaks otherwise. And along with healing essential oils, certainly the benefits of healing would increase. Despite this lack of evidence, physicians often recommend the use of a warm bath to ease discomfort. Essential oils are not water soluble which means “oil and water don’t mix”. To protect your skin and prior to adding to your bath, blend your choice of essential oils with a carrier oil. Choosing some simple on hand ingredients may be easier than you think. Organic Aloe Vera Jelly, which contains thickeners and preservatives as well as aloe Vera leaf extract, is a good choice. You can make this ahead and keep on hand for the duration of your recovery without concern for bacteria. Water based products without a preservative can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Note that Aloe Vera gel, juice and liquid are not Aloe Vera jelly and are water-based. The second option is adding your oils to a vegetable or fruit oil. Add your carrier oil and eo’s to ¼ cup Epsom salts. Using directly in the tub may leave your tub slippery. Combine 1-5 drops of your essential oil or blend into ½ ounce (1 tablespoon) of carrier of choice. For a regular size tub, you could use 5-20 drops per ½ ounce (1 tablespoon). Including a daily Cranberry supplement and drinking plenty of water will help support your bladder and avoid urinary tract infections. Cranberry protects the bladder wall by keeping the bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall. Sitz Bath for Urinary Tract Infection 5 drops Roman Chamomile Anthemis nobilis 2 drops Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis ct. Verbenone 5 drops Thyme Thymus vulgaris ct. linalool 5 drops Palmarosa Cymbopogon martini var. martinii Viral Infections Palmarosa stimulates the immune system which helps to fight off viral infections. The stronger our immune system is, the more resistance we have against unwanted viruses. Other essential oils that support the immune system can include oils such as Frankincense, German chamomile, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Thyme ct. linalool, and Manuka. In this instance, opting for an inhaler is the most effective way to use your oil(s). Palmarosa essential oil smells wonderful and has so many great uses. It is also a rather inexpensive oil, plentiful and no concern of sustainability issues. We encourage anyone to use your oils with respect to nature and continuing availability. A 15 ml bottle usually costs around $8 to $15. Whatever company you go with, check for GC/MS analysis reports, and references on site. • Safely Use Your Bergamot Essential Oil

Bergamot Citrus bergamia is part of the Rutaceae family from Italy and the Ivory Coast. In the perfumery industry, Bergamot is often used and plays a big role in fragrance creation. Its citrus fragrance is unique and goes beautiful with floral oils such as Neroli, Rose and Ylang Ylang as well as herbals oils and other citrus oils. Bergamot can be used to treat symptoms of digestive problems as well as emotional problems including depression, stress and hypertension, joint pain, muscle pain, skin disorders, infection, upper respiratory infections, digestive issues, and more. With essential oils, there are four factors that play apart in safety and exposure: How your oil was applied, how strong of a dilution rate you use, how much you use and how often it is applied. Externally, if not diluted properly, and depending on the constituents (components) within the oil, it can either cause irritation, allergic reaction such as phototoxicity or a photo-allergy reaction. If used incorrectly internally, it can cause neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, carcinogenicity, or fetotoxicity. In this article, I’ll give you some safe and effective information, so you can enjoy the benefits that Bergamot offers without being concerned about the safety aspect of it. First, a few tips about essential oils. Evaporation Rates Essential oils have an evaporation rates and are referred to as “notes”. Top notes such as Bergamot and other citrus evaporate rather quickly. Middle notes are the next to evaporate and the slowest oils to evaporate are your base notes. Because of the various evaporation notes of essential oils, over time you may detect a slight change in the aroma. Keeping your blend in a dark closed essential oil bottle will preserve your oil. Essential oils have shelf lives and to achieve complete shelf life, it will also help to keep them in a cold, dark place. The ideal temperature is 60-65%. A small refrigerator is often used for this purpose. You can refer to our Ultimate Guide to review the various notes as well as other pertinent information for each oil. Distillation Process Citrus fruit are expressed, or steam distilled from the peeling or rind of the fruit. Most citrus are phototoxic with the first reaction from fragrances with citrus oils being reported in 1916. In 1970, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) set safety guidelines and since then phototoxic reactions from fragrances is very rare now. The best Bergamot to purchase is Bergapten-free which is distilled. They contain very little if any FC’s (furanocoumarin). To achieve this, the oil is reprocessed using a process called fractional distillation. This is the safest Bergamot to buy and should be listed as ‘Bergamot FCF’. 1. Alleviate Depression Bergamot is remarkable in reducing psychological stress factors and one way it does this is by assisting in the reduction of blood pressure. Data in referenced source states that BEO “contributes to our understanding of the mode of action of this Phyto-complex on nerve tissue under normal and pathological experimental conditions and provide a rational basis for the practical use of BEO in complementary medicine. The linalyl acetate in Bergamot contributes to relaxing the smooth muscles and has a relaxing effect on the vascular system. For depression, Bergamot goes well with Lavender, Rose, Geranium and Patchouli. The following is one of my signature blends. When first creating the aroma, the emotional effect was so beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes. This brings about peace and calmness, in a happy “worry free” place. (1)(2) Worry Free Cream One Ounce Unscented Cream 10 drops Patchouli Pogostemom cablin 5 drops Bergamot Citrus bergamia 2 drops Vanilla Oleoresin 2 drops Ylang Ylang Cananga odorata var. genuina Blend all ingredients and apply as needed. *It is advised to avoid use of Ylang Ylang on children under 2 years of age. The Patchouli is at too high of a percentage for those under 2 as well.* 2. Reduce Stress and Anxiety In referenced study, results demonstrated that Bergamot essential oil inhaled together with water vapor exerts psychological and physiological effects in a relatively short time, including improvement in fatigue and negative emotions. This may be due to the component linalyl acetate and linalool which contributes to the calming effects of BEO. The linalyl can be around 25% or more depending on the batch your purchase and the linalool can be around 5% or more. And we must include the y-terpinene component which also has sedative properties. Sedative does not always mean “sleep”. In many cases with oils, sedative can also mean calm, relaxed, eased. With that said, it is the oils overall chemical makeup that contributes to the actions of the oils. (3)(4) Try the following blend to reduce your stress and anxiety: Anxiety Calm One-ounce Unscented lotion or cream 5 drops Bergamot Citrus bergamia 5 drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia 5 drops Sweet Orange Citrus sinensis 5 drop Ruh Khus Vetiveria zizanioides 1 Drop Ylang Ylang Cananga odorata var. genuina Blend and use as needed. This is a very soothing, calming lotion. *For under two years of age, cut your blend in half and leave out the Ylang Ylang.* 3. Emotional Health Bergamot essential oil is one of the best oils for supporting us emotionally. This is due to the constituent linalyl acetate. Because it reduces anxiety, eases depression, alleviates stress and is an antispasmodic, it is emotionally supportive. Bergamot is mood lifting and emotionally balancing. (5) Try the following blend: Emotional Blend 1 Ounce carrier oil or unscented lotion of choice 10 drops Bergamot Citrus bergamia 5 drops Neroli Citrus aurantium var. amara 5 Frankincense Boswellia carterii 2 drops Ruh Khus Vetiveria zizanioides *The Neroli has been kept low, making it safe for all ages from 3 months up.* 4. Assist Digestion Bergamot is one of the best antispasmodic essential oils for digestive cramps and can assist with digestion in general. It’s known to ease painful digestive issues, dyspepsia, increase appetite and assist in easing symptoms of colitis. Try the following to ease tummy discomfort. Using Olive Oil with your blend adds extra protection to the tender belly skin. Olive oil has anti-inflammatory properties, wound healing properties, has a higher percentage of anti-oxidants, even higher than vitamin E as well as contains protein, minerals and vitamins. (6) Belly Bliss 10 drops Bergamot Citrus bergamia 5 drops Peppermint Mentha x piperita 10 drops Roman Chamomile Chamaemelum nobile 5 drops Hemp Cannibis sativa 2-ounce first pressed Olive Oil or unscented lotion Blend: Apply counterclockwise on belly every 3 hours until relief. *For children under five years of age, replace Peppermint with Spearmint, a safer alternative for the little ones* 5. Eliminate Intestinal Worms Bergamot is a vermifuge and thus can eliminate intestinal worms. However, Dr. Jean Valnet suggest the essence of Bergamot, a safe and effective alternative to using Bergamot essential oil internally; unless you are under the care of a Clinical Aromatherapist trained in internal use. For internal use, you could also consider Bergamot Hydrosol. These are gentle and may be used internally without the concerns that accompany the internal use of essential oils. I recommend looking for Organic Hydrosols to ensure purity. (7) 6. Relieve or Reduce Muscle Aches and Pains Bergamot is antispasmodic, calming and relaxing to the smooth muscles of the body, easing achy muscles and joints. Evidenced in referenced study supports the redox basis of several types of pain and identified a new property of natural antioxidants derived from Citrus bergamia and its reduction of pain conditions. ‘Thus, the use of natural antioxidants may represent a promising and innovative therapeutic approach to counteract the side effects of prolonged use of other drugs as opioids or to inhibit inflammatory pain.’ (8) (9) (10). Allanblackia floribunda oil or Arnica Arnica montana both have excellent inflammatory and pain relief properties and would be great carriers to choose from for the following pain relief blend. Pain Away One-ounce carrier oil 5 drops Hemlock Tsuga canadensis 5 drops Bergamot Citrus bergamia 5 drops Balsam Fir Abies balsamea 5 drops Engleman Spruce Picea engelmanii 5 drops Siberian Fir Abies sibirica Blend and apply as needed. Every 3-4 hours is best to reduce the inflammation and relieve pain. 7. Treat Skin Irritations Bergamot is remarkable for many skin issues including, boils, acne, eczema and psoriasis, boils, wounds, varicose veins and much more. Bergamot has a cooling effect on the skin and works well for itching, wound healing, topical pain and discomfort. Bergamot demonstrated that it inhibited protein molecules related to inflammation, immune responses, and tissue-remodeling processes, suggesting they have anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties. (11) Psoriasis and Dry Skin 1-ounce Rose Hip Rosa canina L. carrier oil 4 drops Bergamot Citrus bergamia 5 drops Patchouli Pogostemom cablin 5 drops Helichrysum Helichrysum Italicum 5 drops Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia 5 drops Carrot Seed Daucus carota Blend and apply 4 times a day, including after bathing and before bed. The following blend softens dry irritated skin, leaving it smooth and beautiful. I recommend using a skin healing, complimentary carrier such as Almond Prunus amygdalus var. dulcis oil, Babassu Orbygnia oil or Jojoba Simmondsia chinensis oil (wax). *Reduce Tea Tree by half for those under two years of age.* Skin So Soft One-ounce carrier oil 5 drops Bergamot Citrus bergamia 5 drops Sweet Orange Citrus senisis 5 drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia 3 drops Rose Absolute Rosa x damascena For children younger than 2 years of age, reduce or leave out the Rose absolute which should be no more than 0.25% or 2 drops per ounce. 8. Reduce or Eliminate Scars Bergamot is considered a wound healer and antiseptic. Paired with oils known for their cicatrisant properties, Bergamot is a great addition to skin healing blends, including elimination of scars. It’s important to remember to use Bergamot FCF for all skin products. The following blend ahs been quite successful in healing deep scarring. When applying oils for healing wounds, use after the wound has closed and scabbed over. For scarring, Calendula Calendula officinalis oil is a skin regenerator, anti-microbial, antiseptic, great for wound healing (cicatrisant), varicose veins, skin infections, cuts, chapped skin and lips and works nicely in the following blend for healing wounds and scars. Skin Wound Healer ½-ounce Calendula Calendula officinalis (Co2 extract, infused) Oil 4 drops Frankincense Boswellia carterii 5 drops Helichrysum 2 drops Myrrh Commiphora myrrha 4 drops Manuka Leptospermum scoparium ct east cape *Myrrh is contraindicated for pregnancy and breastfeeding, due to its β-elemene and furanodiene content, which may be fetotoxic* 9. Treat Fungal Infections Bergamot essential oil has been tested in vitro and shown to be active against Dermatophytes. It showed that the compounds that were effective against dermatophytes to be superior to the anticandidal effect that was observed. Data indicated that bergamot oil can be used as an efficacious antifungal agent against dermatophytes as well as yeast pathogens. The results showed substantial support to popular or anecdotal beliefs in the effectiveness of treating skin and mucosal infections as well as candida with bergamot oil. Briefly, every essential oil is made up of chemical families. Within the chemical families, you will find the constituents (components) that contribute to the therapeutic properties of each oil. There are several components within Bergamot that contribute to the antifungal properties that work together and include a-pinene, b-phellandrene, terpinolene, linalol and geranyl acetate. How can we use this to be effective? Try the following blend. Each oil in the following blend offers properties that not only have antifungal and candida properties but also support the immune system (Balsam Copaiba) and enhance skin penetration (Cedarwood), making your product even more effective. (12) Black Seed, Tamanu and Neem oil have anti-fungal properties and gives you some options to choose from for the following blend. Fungal Infections ½-ounce Carrier of choice 5 drops Bergamot Citrus bergamia 5 drops Basil Ocimum basilicum ct Linalool 5 drops Cedarwood Juniperus virginiana 5 drops Copaiba Oil Copaifera officinalis *Basil can cause skin irritation and allergy reaction and must be kept at a low percentage to avoid reaction. For children under two years of age, leave out Basil.* 10. Penetration Enhancer Bergamot, like many oils, are highly lipophilic and penetrate the tissues of the body quite easy. Many components of oils do not penetrate the skin well. To increase this penetration, oils with components capable of this action are formulated by into blends. This beautiful therapeutic action is a quality found in many oils. All Citrus oils contain d-limonene, one of the constituents responsible for this penetrating action. 11. Lower Cholesterol Rosuvastatin is used to lower to the overall cholesterol levels to avoid cardiometabolic risk. In a controlled group, 77 patients with elevated serum LDL-C and triglycerides were tested. With the addition of bergamot-derived polyphenolic fraction with the Rosuvastatin, it significantly enhanced rosuvastatin-induced effect on serum lipemic profile compared to rosuvastatin alone. Although this is quite effective, to accomplish this, it’s advised to seek out a Clinical Aromatherapist trained in pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of essential oils. This knowledge allows them to determine dosage, proper delivery vehicle to protect the tender mucous membranes inside our bodies (essential oils can be very destructive to mucous membranes undiluted) as well as duration of dosage. It’s advised to also speak with your physician if you are on medication and plan to use essential oils internally. Many are irritants, and many interfere with the actions of some medications. (13) (14) 12. Clear Congestion Like most citrus oils, due to the components d-limonene and linalool within Bergamot, it is excellent for fighting off bacterial infections including colds, flu, and other bacterial infections. Try diffusing the following blend to keep your home healthy and bacteria free. Bergamot Stay Healthy Diffuser Blend 6 drops Bergamot Citrus bergamia 4 drops Lemon Citrus limon 3 drops Yuzu Citrus junos *When diffusing or using essential oils, protect your Fur babies and remove them from the room. For more on Animal Safety, visit Kelly Holland Azzaro at Animal Aromatherapy (Safe Use) on Facebook.* 13. Starve a Fever Bergamot essential oil is a Febrifuge, meaning it can assist in bringing fevers down by cooling of the body. There are many oils that are considered febrifuge oils. Some gentle safer choices include Spearmint Mentha spicata, Roman Chamomile Chamaemelum nobile, German Chamomile Matricaria recutita, Frankincense Boswellia carterii, Juniper Juniperus osteosperma, Palmarosa Cymbopogon martini var. motia, Patchouli Pogostemom cablin and Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia. Follow all previous noted safety advice. I find that Spearmint essential oil combined with Bergamot is ideal in helping to reduce younger children's fever. Keeping spearmint under 0.25% for those between 3-24 months or 1% for those between 2-6 years old, you can add 2-3 drops of Spearmint and 5 drops of Bergamot into a carrier oil or lotion and apply to childs chest, neck and upper back area. 14. Sleep Deep Bergamot is one of the best oils for a good night’s sleep. Because of the linalyl acetate and linalool content, it’s calming effect works perfect for sleep and is often found in sleep blends for children as well as adults. Try the following blend. Deep Sleep Tonight One-ounce unscented lotion 5 drops Bergamot Citrus bergamia 5 drops Spikenard Nardostachys jatamansi 5 drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia 10 drops Vetiver Chrysopogon zizanioides or Ruh Khus Vetiveria zizanioides Blend. Before bed, apply to neck and chest area and enjoy a good night’s rest. Safe for all ages. *Most Citrus oils are phototoxic. Photosensitization and phototoxicity can occur when certain natural chemicals, found in all of nature, particularly quite potent in essential oils, react when exposed to ultraviolet light, including tanning beds. This can cause inflammation, blistering and reddening/burning of the skin.” 15. Heal Wounds Use bergamot as part of your wound healing regimen will increase your healing time. Paired with cicatrisant (wound healing) oils, it can treat cold sores, ulcers, topical wounds, boils and other skin issues. 16. Wear as Deodorant Bergamot is an excellent antibacterial. Along with its cooling properties, it would work nicely in a deodorant. Bergamot is often used in the fragrance industry because of its unique soft floral aroma, unlike other citrus oils. It goes nicely with other citrus oils, florals, herbal oils and spicy oils such as Black Pepper or Ginger. Blend into your favorite carrier oil and use as a deodorant. Odor Relief One-ounce carrier 5 drops Bergamot Citrus bergamia 4 drops Rose Geranium Pelargonium roseum x asperum 10 Drops Clary Sage Salvea sclarea 17. Immune Supporter Bergamot is supportive to immune systems that have been compromised. It is excellent at fighting off colds, flu and other bacterial infection and viral infections. Other immune supportive oils include all citrus oils, Clary Sage, Lavender, Rosewood, Sweet Marjoram, Tea Tree to name a few. One of my favorite quotes is from Marguerite Maury, the Mother of Aromatherapy, from her book, first originally published in French as Le capital "jeunesse" with editions de la Table Rond in 1961. It was published in English as "The Secret of Life and Youth" in 1964 and she stated “To reach the individual we need an individual remedy. Each of us is a unique message. It is only the unique remedy that will suffice. We must, therefore, seek odiferous substances which present affinities with the human being we intend to treat, those which will compensate for his deficiencies and those which make his faculties’ blossom.” https://www.researchgate.net/publication/41111278_Neuropharmacology_of_the_essential_oil_of_bergamot https://www.researchgate.net/publication/320408509_Linalool- https://www.medicaljournals.se/acta/content/html/10.2340/00015555-0251 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25824404 https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/8294#section=Mechanism-of-Action Sheppard-Hanger, Sylla; The Aromatherapy Practitioner Manual, Bergamot Citrus bergamia, pg. 167 Dr. Jean Valnet, The Practice of Aromatherapy, Vermifuge oils, pg. 81 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2213434415300232 Dr. Jean Valnet, The Practice of Aromatherapy, Bergamot pg. 91 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26996621 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=bergamot+skin+healing In vitro activity of Citrus bergamia... • Essential Oils and Intimacy

When wanting to spice up the bedroom, there are no quick fixes. But there are things we can do to pave the path to some cuddly time. An aphrodisiac is defined as a substance that enhances or stimulates passion and sexual desire. There is no essential oil, herb, food, chemical or other substance that will miraculously arouse someone who has no desire to become aroused. Drugs like Viagra are not aphrodisiacs. They simply ensure that a man's system functions as it should if he so desires to be intimate, but these drugs have nothing to do with the emotional connection between two people. Individuals that are physically, mentally or emotionally exhausted, under stress, nutritionally unhealthy, depressed, anxious or physically ill may have a more difficult time engaging in and enjoying intimacy. Substances, including essential oils, that are considered aphrodisiacs are substances that can help relieve the physical, psychological or emotional ailments that can interfere with sexual desire or arousal. For example, an aphrodisiac may assist with one or more of the following: Ease Physical ailments Reduce Stress Calm Anxiety Energize the Body and Mind Enhance and Uplift Mood Ease Depression and Sadness Appeal to the Senses Essential Oil ‘Aphrodisiacs’ Remember that the definition of an aphrodisiac is a substance that enhances or helps stimulate passion and sexual arousal. Any essential oil that helps ease your stress or that you find sensually stimulating can act as an aphrodisiac for you. I’ve chosen a few but you may find others that are more appealing to your own senses. Jasmine, In Ayurvedic medicine, J. officinale has been used as an antidepressant and sedative. (1) It enhances self-confidence and regulate your mood, help you stay alert, reduce your anxiety, and could help your self-confidence and increases attentiveness. (2) Ylang, Ylang Ylang has a balancing effect, where blood pressure and heart rate decrease but attentiveness and alertness increase (3). It has also been shown that topical application can elicit feelings of relaxation and calmness (4) Along with these beautiful flowers, we can add a citrus such as Bergamot. Bergamot is one of the most supportive oils for emotions and most often used in the fragrance industry. It’s relaxing, restorative, calming, emotionally uplifting, and helps reduce tension and insomnia. You can spice up your blends with spicy essential oils but be sure to use them sparingly and cautiously as most spicy oils can be irritants to the skin. They can include cinnamon, clove bud or ginger. The citrus will calm the spicy out a bit and give it a beautiful balance. If you choose a mint which also can go nicely, I suggest Spearmint since it is light and refreshing and not as “heavy” of a mint as Peppermint is. In addition, I would absolutely look at a few conifer oils such as cypress, various firs and the refreshing aroma of Scotch pine, Hemlock, Engelman spruce. Lastly, consider the rich, deep sensual aromas of Patchouli, Sandalwood and Vetiver, especially in the gentleman’s blends. Last, any blends you create will have therapeutic actions and part of these actions are, of course, tied to the aroma as mentioned above. When I’m blending for the aroma specifically, I blend by notes. The notes of oils are the evaporation rates. Some evaporate quicker than others. For example, citrus oils are considered “top” notes and evaporate the quickest. Next is your middle notes and your florals, and spices fall under this category. And last is the “base” notes and these take the longest to evaporate. Woods, bark, root oils and resins are base notes, although that is not always the case. When blending for fragrance, I use at least one oil from each category. It’s fun and as your top note starts to slowly go through the evaporation process, your aroma will make a very subtle change over time. Blend with a skin friendly carrier oil or unscented oil. See our post on carrier oils for their actions and benefits. • Aromatherapy and Weight Loss

Many want to find that miracle weight loss solution and you may have heard that essential oils such as grapefruit will help you loose weight. And they can, but not in the way you may think. First, essential oils alone will not shed weight. For example, although there have been claims of Grapefruit essential oil stimulating weight loss, there is no scientific research to back it. More importantly, unlike the juice of the fruit which can indeed assist with weight loss, the oil is distilled from the rind or peeling. The main component within the oil is d-limonene. D-Limonene is not useful as a weight loss component. However, emotionally, it's very supportive. This and other components effect us emotionally and mentally as we inhale the aromas. Topically this works as well but inhalation is the direct route through the olfactory system and making its way into the central nervous system (CNS). We don’t want to rule out essential oils. Used in conjunction with various other weight loss techniques and healthy choices, the can play a big role in reaching your goals. Let’s first address a few weight loss myths. The Detox Theory Myth in Aromatherapy A myth we often see in Aromatherapy is that essential oils will “detox” the body. However, there are no essential oils that are going to detox the body. Along with other processes, there are 3 organs of the body that do a great job detoxing daily. The organs that function in this manner are the kidneys, through the skin (our biggest organ) when sweating and the liver. It’s a myth that essential oils will “open the liver to increase liver function”. (1) The best way to detox your body is with plenty of fresh water and nutrients so these organs can do their jobs properly. The only time that someone might really need help with detoxifying is if his or her kidney or liver is failing. In those extreme cases, dialysis is the choice. Our Metabolism To clarify, it is misinformation that essential oils can stimulate our metabolism. Our metabolic process is orchestrated by many hormones and our body’s circadian rhythms. The circadian rhythm regulates the physiological process, telling our bodies when to sleep, eat, and rise. Environmental changes such as sunlight and temperature can affect these processes. Hormones have various actions from controlling appetite to speeding up the mitochondria, which plays a critical role in the generation of metabolic energy in eukaryotic cells. These cells are responsible for most of the useful energy derived from the breakdown of carbohydrates and fatty acids. They are converted to ATP (adenosine triphosphate) by the process of oxidative phosphorylation or, to simplify it, they are the little energy packets inside each cell that burns energy and more. (2) (3) Nutrition and what we eat makes a difference in how our body will respond. We need to provide what it requires so that all its zillions of cells have the necessary basic elements it requires to run smoothly including minerals, vitamins and nutrients such as proteins, healthy carbohydrates and healthy fats that the body cells need. Our bodies can run like a fine-tuned engine, when we keep maintenance up. Internal Use of Essential Oils and Our Gut Flora I often see the suggestion of using essential oils internally for weight loss. Without training in proper application, vehicle delivery and correct oils to use internally, certain oils when ingested will kill off your natural gut flora which can create further health issues rather than positive effects. If you plan to use essential oils internally, I suggest you seek out a Clinical Aromatherapist in your area to guide you along. They have been trained in the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of essential oils and internal use. *Before beginning your weight-loss regimen to regain a healthier lifestyle, check with your health care practitioner if you have any underlying health issues before beginning your weight loss journey. Your practitioner may give you tips for defining why you may have poor eating habits, whether it be from depression or other issues* Our Lymphatic System One last thing we can look at before moving on to how essential oils can help with your weight loss is our lymphatic system. Since it also plays a role in keeping us healthy and also in weight control, understanding how you can help it function better will boost your overall health. Keeping it to basics, the lymphatic system flows one direction, up. There are lymph nodes along the way including in our ankles, knees, the groin area and on. (see chart) The Lymph vessels are located next to the blood vessels. There is no pump like the heart to move the lymphatic fluid around. It takes movement and exercise since it plays the key role in helping the lymphatic system function properly. The lymphatic system relies on the movement of the whole organism, powered by muscle contractions, to keep the lymph fluid flowing. The lymphatic system carries its fluid towards the heart. The lymphatic system ties into the immune system as an intricate part of the system and the immune system relies on every system of the body. Our Intricate Body Parts As you can see, the body has many intricate parts at work that can work in our favor. However, like a fine tune car, we must take care of our bodies and that starts inside; physically, mentally and emotionally. Knowing the reasons for weight gain and addressing them is a great place to start. Crash or fad diets will not work so we each must find what works with our own unique body chemistry. Some of the possible reasons for weight gain include: Depression Poor eating habits Lack of nutritional knowledge Inactive lifestyle Eating to comfort Eating out of boredom Grief Loneliness Eating because everyone else is *Essential oils can be used to energize us and keep our spirits up, so we can make it to the finish line* Essential Oils Can Help Using essential oils will not miraculously drop the pounds. They will, however, assist with you with emotional lows and withdrawal type symptoms that you may experience as you move forward with your weight loss program. Essential oils can offer energetic protection, strengthen self-confidence and motivation, relieve depression and bring clarity to the mind as well as be emotionally uplifting. Essential oils molecules consist of constituents or components within them that offer therapeutic properties. This is nature and not surprising. Therapeutic properties exist in most plant species. They are used in foods, drugs, and products we use daily. However, some come with warning labels. So holds true with essential oils. Because of their condensed state and potency, taking proper steps to remain safe when using essential oils is a must. Following a safe regimen, essential oils can increase endurance during difficult times and offer support, comfort and confidence in challenging situations. Many can be calming to your mind and help to promote a stronger self-image. Oils such as Siberian Fir is emotionally vitalizing and increases positive energy. What I find remarkable about essential oils is there is no noticeable side effects that drugs come with such as heart racing, sudden changes in emotional nervousness. Essential oils are subtle. Many times, I will stop and realize that my mood has changed in a positive direction. Lets Address the Weight Loss To address our weight loss issue, we need to start by addressing the underlying causes of excess eating that leads to weight gain. We’ve listed some blends that may address some issues relating to weight gain. The following blends can be used topically, although I find that emotional and mental issues are best addressed through inhalation as previously mentioned. When using inhalers, blend all your oils together and add 15 drops per inhaler. Once added, snap on cap, label so you remember what each inhaler is for and use as needed. For lotions, creams or use with carrier oils, blend at 1% or 9 drops per ounce. Do not use essential oils undiluted externally or internally. When creating blends, I take time to find a beautiful balance of components that have been researched with certain therapeutic needs in mind. We are all unique individuals, and with this in mind, we may require a different solution. Enjoy your individuality and continue to search the treatment that suites your uniqueness. Citrus oils have an uplifting and energizing effect on our emotional state. Data studied and obtained on Lime essential oil suggested that lime through inhalation plays an important role in weight loss and could be useful in the treatment of drug-induced obesity and related diseases. (4) Keep Your Skin Moisturized One of the best things we can do for our skin is keeping it moisterized. As you lose weight, especially too quickly, can leave our skin loose and sagging. Take your time and lose weight gradually, allowing your skin time to improve elasticity. Moisterizing comes from inside as well as outside. Drinking plenty of water each day is vital to your skins health. Please leave your comments and let me know what you think. I appreciate it. • Clary Sage: How it works

Clary sage Salvia sclarea essential oil comes from the flowers and leaves of the plant. It has a welcoming warm, somewhat sweet, a bit of spicy, and a hint of a musky aroma. Emotionally, Clary Sage inspires a clearer perspective on concerning, worrisome thoughts and can help assist you in finding peace with the loss of loved ones. Although there is little therapeutic information on Clary Sage since it was exclusively used for the perfumery trade, there is research on the components (constituents) within the oil with Linalool and Linalyl acetate being the major components. (See additional resources 1) It’s an interesting oil in that it has a lovely balance between a stimulant and a relaxant, offering an uplifting and supportive outlook while calming our thoughts. Where there is a misconception is thinking that Clary Sage is an estrogen or contains estrogen. That simply is not possible. Clary Sage essential oil does not contain estrogen or have estrogen like properties. It does have a great reputation for easing cramps, labor pains, increase menstruation and more and there is good reason for that. It’s through observation of women using Clary Sage that we know it works. We’ve read the experiences or had them ourselves. However, it doesn’t work as you may think it does or may have been led to believe it does. To explain further, all biological functions depend on events that occur at a molecular level. Molecules in biological systems work the way they do because of absolute specific types of relationships between active molecules and receptor sites in all life forms,. This includes us. Molecules are three-dimensional structures and often this perspective is lost to the untrained eye who only look at the two-dimensional representations of these structures on paper. The structure of the molecule basically determines whether it can perform the desirable action, therefore 3D computer molecular modeling is so vital in drug discovery. If a molecule doesn’t have the right shape and size to fit where it needs to fit, then it is not going to be a candidate to meet the specific need that is being researched. I find this fascinating. If we look at some chemical structures, we could see why it’s impossible for clary sage oil, or any essential oil for that matter, to act as an estrogen in the human body. There are three main estrogens in humans known as estrone or E1, estradiol or E2 and estriol or E3. All three of these molecules belong to the general class of molecules known as ‘steroids'. Steroids are defined by molecules that have the four joined ring structures which include three six-membered rings and one five-membered ring arranged which is known as estradiol. All steroids have three hexagons and one pentagon joined together. They must have this structure to be a steroid with the specific steroid of interest being defined by the various functional groups that are attached to this basic quad-ring system. Without this basic backbone structure, the molecule cannot be a steroid, nor can it behave as a steroid would in biological systems. So why do people claim that clary sage oil has estrogen like properties? The claims we’ve seen point to sclareol. However, 99% of the time there is less than 0.5% in any clary sage found on the essential oil market. It’s a heavy molecule which makes it very difficult to get at a heavier level in the essential oil. It could be done but some proprietary distillation processes must be done. However, most companies will not go to that trouble because the sclareol is a valuable precursor to a very important molecule in the synthetic fragrance industry and not considered an important molecule to the essential oil. Also, the molecular structure of sclareol has very little in common with the structure of any the estrogen molecules, E2 being the one that would have the most in common. Estradiol contains what is called a phenol functional group: a hydroxyl group (OH) attached to what is called a benzene ring. The phenolic structure of the molecule is important for estrogenicity which is present in the second ring. Estrogenicity stimulates the development and maintenance of female secondary sex characteristics, exert systemic effects such as the growth and maturation of long bones, and promote estrus in many females. as is the presence of a second ring. However, sclareol doesn’t contain a phenolic structure, nor does it have a benzene ring. Sclareol is a labdane diterpene, and this class of molecule does not incorporate estrogen-like structures. This is because both are what is called “diols”, meaning there are two alcohol groups. Sclareol is not a steroid but what would have to be termed a diterpene diol, not even remotely close to the necessary steroidal backbone. Sclareol, a diterpene idol found in clary sage oil in trace quantities (less than 0.5%). If we compare steroidal estrogen structures with the structure of sclareol, we can see that the sclareol does not have the quad-ring system that defines steroids. Sclareol only has 2 ring structures, which means it is in no way a good fit in any receptor site that would accept any of the estrogens. In addition, the two alcohol groups in sclareol, which likely play a key role in how the estradiol molecule reacts once attached to its receptor, are in very different proximity to one another compared to the female hormone estradiol. All biological functions depend on events that happen at the molecular level. Molecules in biological systems have very specific ways, based on three-dimensional structure, in which they interact to accomplish their designed tasks. We can see that, based on the structural parameters of both systems, there is no way that sclareol could ever perform the function of estrogen in the human body. Note, this is indisputable scientific fact. The chemical evidence is plain to see. The fact is that sclareol is not a steroidal estrogen, does not mimic the function of any estrogen molecules, does not stimulate estrogen production (how can it?) and appears to have no mechanism by which it can “balance hormones” at least not by a pathway that has anything to do with estrogens. All that said, we women know it works. And I suspect that the combination of therapeutic actions of clary sage, most notably, as an emmenagogue, is why women find clary sage so effective. That along with anti-spasmodic, anti-depressant and sedative therapeutic properties are a sure win for easing symptoms during ‘that’ time of the month or any time. It’s why we love our clary sage. And although there are many oils that act as an emmenagogue, I find none that come near the fine balance of properties of our beloved clary cage. (see additional resources 5,6) There are several ways you can use Clary sage. We’ll cover a few applications to take under consideration. I’ll start with one of the most rewarding ways to use Clary sage when those cramps come; and that is a Sitz or “hip” bath. Sitz baths work remarkably well for different circumstances and most certainly, when the pressure of bloating and cramps are present. Anytime you want to ease pain or discomfort, inflammation or speed up healing, soaking in the warm water will increase blood flow to the area, easing discomfort and increasing your healing. There may be situations where a sitz bath may not heal your condition, but it can bring great relief to many associated symptoms. Run 3-4 inches of warm water in your tub and add a single or combination of oils. For a regular size tub, you could use 5-20 drops per ½ ounce (1 tablespoon) of carrier oil. Blend your essential oils with your carrier. Then add your blend to bath salts to avoid skin irritation and a slippery tub. Choice of other oils for menstruation discomfort include Cypress Cupressus sempervirens, Basil ct. Linalool, Bergamot Citrus bergamia, Jasmine Jasminum officinale, Lavender Lavendula angustifolia and Sweet Marjoram Origanum officinalis. You can use that same blend in an inhaler, using 9-15 drops per inhaler. Inhalation is the quickest route of application for emotional and mental issues, offering quick beautiful balancing energy to your mind, resting it. For those isolated pain places such as the lower back, blend 2-5% (9 drops per one ounce carrier is 1%) as needed with an unscented lotion or carrier of choice, keeping in mind that clary sage can be a moderate irritant. Apply as often as needed. For overall body use, keep your blend at 1% or less. Following these simple guidelines will allow you to enjoy the benefits, without risks. • My Uses for Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary is certainly one of my favorite oils. Before I tell you my uses, let me tell you a bit about Rosemary herb and essential oil. Rosemary Rosmarinus officianalis herb was most common in the South of France (Provence), Italy, Spain, Tunisia and Dalmatia. At one time, it’s main use was in cooking, infusions into vegetable oils and later, essential oil, which was obtained by steam distillation. The main constituents or chemical components within Rosemary, depending on the chemotype, are pinene, camphene, cineole, borneals, camphors. (1) There are different chemotypes of Rosemary essential oil. The chemotype of the oil is determined by the components within an oil and for Rosemary, the major chemotypes are mentioned above. There are 3 major chemo types (ct) of Rosemary used for essential oil; ct camphor, ct. verbenone and ct. 1-8 cineole. When purchasing Rosemary essential oil, the chemo type should always be included on the bottle, along with the name and botanical name. Like any essential oil, the safety of the oil is determined by the components within the oil and although some are from the same species, the chemistry can vary. And although we review an oil for it’s major components, it’s the overall chemistry of any oil that makes it therapeutically effective. With the exception of Rosemary Rosmarinus officianlis ct. 1,8-cineole, the standard dilution rates for Rosemary apply which is 9 drops of essential oil to 1 ounce of carrier oil or unscented lotion. The standard dilution rate for Rosemary is as follows: Up to 3 months, no oils should be used; 3-24 mnths. 0.5%; 2-6 yrs. 2%; 6-15 yrs. 3%, 15+ is 5% and for those that are pregnant, 2%. This would be maximum dilution rates. When blending, start at a lower rate to find the threshold that best suites your needs. This especially applies to children and the eldery. Their skin is very senstive and in the very young, their respiratory system is more delicate than others. Ct 1-8 cineole is found in many many oils, up to a possible 270 oils, and it offers remarkable therapeutic properties including as an expectorant, hypotensive, central nervous system stimulant although sedative as well, great anesthetic, helps in opening broncial airways and many more properties that I will cover here. (2) Dr. Jean Valnet continues that Rosemary’s therapeutic properties also include as a general cardiac stimulant, stimulant to the adrenal cortex restorative, a cerbral stimulant and more. Rosemary also offers skin healing properties for wounds and burns, as a parasiticde and even as an aphrodisiac. (3) Because 1-8 cineole presents a risk of negative interefence in younger undeveloped respiratory systems, Tisserand advises caution with Rosemary 1-8, cineole chemotype. The recommended maximum dilution rates for 1,8-cineole are; for 3-24 months, 0.5%; 2-6 yrs. 1%; 6-15 yrs, 2%; 15+, 5% and those pregnant, 2%. Again, I’d like to re-iterate that this is maximum use to stay in the “safety zone”. Now that we’ve covered the safety of Rosemary essential oil, along with your essential oil, Rosemary herb is one of the strongest herbs for the liver, gallbladder and colon and has no safety concerns. It’s important to chat a bit about the herb since it works well with the essential oil, internally and externally. For internal use, you can steep 1 tablespoon of rosemary leaves in boiling water. Leave to sit for at least 10 minutes. Drink one cup after each meal. It's not advised to use essential oils internally without proper training in pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of essential oils which includes learning to use the proper dosage, application (depending on diagnosis), duration of time, gathering a case history on client, using oils that are considered “safe” for internal use, knowing the cause (not just symptoms). Methods of application for internal use can include capsules filled with honey and suggested amount of essential oil. For Rosemary, 3-4 drops twice a day is the suggested maximum per day. Anymore can create adverse effects. Eat a proper meal when taking internally. If treating lower bowel issues such as IBS, you will need enteric capsules to make it to the lower bowel where IBS occurs. *I encourage you to seek the advice of a Qualified Aromatherapist trained in Aromatic Medicine before attempting internal use.* USES: Wounds: Rosemary has shown to be a cerebral stimulant, creating more blood flow. When using Rosemary in your wound healing product, it helps to increase more blood flow to the wounded area. This is due to the component Camphor, present in all Rosemary chemotypes, from a small percentage up to over 30% of the oil found in the Rosemary chemotype (ct) Camphor. The wound healing component in Rosemary is Borneol, a component found under the essential oil chemical family Monoterpenols. This component helps to lessen the healing time and has shown great results in healing the scarring as well. Along with other wound healing oils, you’ll cut your healing time down dramatically. Once your wound has scabbed over and is sealed, you can begin using your product. When choosing your Rosemary, look for the GC/MS report and the two mentioned components for wound healing. Many company’s carry various chemotypes. Always use companies that provide these reports on their website. (4) Wound Healing Blend One-ounce Tamanu oil 10 drops Rosemary Rosmarinus officianalis ct. Verbenone 7 drops Helichrysum Helichrysum italicum 3 drops Jasmine absolute Jasminum grandiflorum Directions: Apply up to 4 times a day, especially after shower and before bed. Duration of time depends on the depth of the wound and scarring, Blood pressure: Because of Rosemary’s ability to stimulate the circulatory system, it stands to reason that it would assist with the levels of blood pressure. As stated in referenced article, “The increase achieved in blood pressure values after administration of Rosemary essential oil is clinically significant. The results obtained from this prospective clinical trial prove the effectiveness of statistical methodology as a new approach to explain the anti-hypotensive effect of rosemary essential oil and its relationship with the improvement in patients' quality of life”. (5) Immune Support: One way to improve your immune system is getting your lymphatic system and circulatory system’s functioning correctly. Rosemary’s stimulating properties can help them do just that. By doing a lymphatic massage and cleanse, and along with a clean diet and exercise, you can improve your immune system dramatically. Another important step in keeping your immune system healthy is keeping your mouth and throat wet. Drinking water is not only important in keeping our insides healthy, but it also keeps our mouth moist. I dry mouth can lead to bacterial infections such as candida, or mouth sores. This in turn can weaken our immune systems, especially after being ill. Many people who have gone through chemo and/or radiation suffer from mouth issues and are encouraged to keep their mouths moist and bacteria free. Gallbladder support: Essential oils are not always the way to go. Don’t forget about the power of the herb. Per Jean Valnet, to protect the gallbladder, this is done through Rosemary “tonics”, which is the herbs steeped and a tea or tonic drank. (6) Along with following the directions given in the beginning of the article on steeping Rosemary leaves, massaging or stimulating the vagus nerve with Rosemary essential oil can ease inflammation. The vagus nerve extends from the brain stem to the lowest viscera of the abdomen and very much beyond and massaging it can bring tremendous relief. The vagus nerve travels through multiple organs such as the lungs and the heart, spreading its network to the tongue, throat, intestines and glands. The vagus nerve is part of the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for maintaining unconscious actions such as keeping the heart rate constant and instigating the breakdown of food. But the gallbladder? That’s right, it includes the gallbladder and plays a crucial role in the functioning our biliary system. The nerve helps control the contraction of the gallbladder, stimulates the digestive system and gallbladder. and influences the production and release of bile into the gallbladder. If you suspect a more serious issue, consult your physician. Try the following for a comforting massage. One-ounce Jojoba oil or carrier of choice 3 drops Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis ct. 1,8 cineole 2 drops Lavender (angustifolia) 4 drops Roman Chamomile Chamaemelum nobile Colds and Flu symptoms are not pleasant, but Rosemary can help. One of the greatest benefits of Rosemary essential oil is its function as an expectorant. Whether you are still suffering from the cold or flu or remnants of it, an expectorant will help to clear out the left behind mucous build up. An expectorant works to release sputum, phlegm and mucous from our airways allowing us to breath more freely as well as relieve infection. One-ounce unscented lotion or carrier oil 8 drops Ravintsara Cinnamomum camphora ct. 1,8 cineole 6 drops Eucalyptus Eucalyptus globulus 4 drops Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis ct. 1,8 cineole Blend and apply to chest and neck area as often as needed. This also goes great in a personal inhaler. Inhalers area a great way to get right to the source. Using along-side a topical application could cut your healing time down. You can leave out the carrier and make an inhaler which is great for on the go or needing a safer application if you have small children around. There is nothing more stimulating for the circulatory systems than Rosemary essential oil. After a busy day, gently massage your legs to increase circulation and ease pain and any inflammation. If you tend to be on the cold side, by increasing your circulation, the body becomes warmer. Try a good overall massage with the following for arterial, venous and capillary stimulation: One-Ounce carrier of choice 5 drops Rosemary Rosmarinus officianalis (Ct of choice) 5 drops Petitgrain Citrus aurantium var. Amara or Bigaradia 3 drops Helichrysum Helichrysum italicum Rosemary is excellent in relieving headaches, including migraines by not only stimulating the circulatory system, increasing blood supply to the area, it also stimulates the central nervous system, relieving tension and headaches. You can try combining the following with a carrier oil or unscented lotion and rub on your temples and base of your neck. You can also add the following to an inhaler to bring almost instant relief. A few drops on a warm compress (away from skin) applied across the forehead will also ease pain. One-ounce Unscented lotion, carrier oil or one Inhaler 6 drops Frankincense Boswellia carterii 5 drops Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis ct. verbenone 4 drops Eucalyptus Eucalyptus globulus 1 drop Jasmine Jasminum grandiflorum Rosemary, no matter the chemotype, has peripheral antinociceptive activity, which means it can reduce sensitivity to pain (analgesic). Rosemary is also a strong anti-inflammatory and along with its well-known ability to stimulate the circulatory system, it brings great relief to sore, tight muscles. Try the following after your workout at the gym, in the yard, running or whatever your workout is. Use after shower and before bedtime. My recommendation for carrier oils are Tamanu or Trauma oil, both available at most essential oil websites. One-ounce Carrier oil of choice 5 drops Rosemary (camphor or 1,8 cineole ct.) 3 drops Black Pepper Piper nigrum 6 drops Cypress Cupressus sempervirens 4 drops Ginger Zingiber officinale As with sore muscles, Rosemary can bring great relief to inflammation due to arthritis, specifically Rheumatoid Arthritis. (7) The oils in the previous blend are also recommended for Rheumatoid arthritis. For daily minor aches, consider reducing the blend from 2% to 1%. To do this, use 2 ounces of carrier oil instead of one ounce. The next use for Rosemary is assisting with the associated symptoms from damage to your peripheral nerves. Neuropathy can cause weakness, inflammation, numbness and pain in your hands and feet as well as other parts of your body. Stimulation to the central nervous system may bring relief from the various symptoms of neuropathy. As with previous uses, stimulation is key to keeping our bodies functioning more efficiently and in our favor. Use the previous blends or try the following blend. One-ounce carrier of choice 6 drops Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis ct. 1,8 cineole or ct. camphor 4 drops Eucalyptus Eucalyptus globulus 5 drops Sweet Marjoram Origanum majorana 3 drops Lemon Citrus limon My next use for Rosemary essential oil is for acne. Rosemary has shown to enhance the free radical scavenging activity in the body simply by inhaling it. (8) This can decrease free radical induced skin damage. Rosemary is also long been used as an astringent. Rosemary will help to regulate the oil secretions of the hair follicles. For skincare products, I recommend keeping your percentage at a maximum of 1% or 9 drops of essential oil to carrier. I’d like to say an essential oil can rid us pf cellulite, but no product can get rid of cellulite. Cellulite is a multifactorial condition and can be stubborn to most treatments. Things that can lessen the appearance include muscle building, tanning, diet, vitamins and plenty of hydration. Massaging the skin with stimulating and skin healing essential oils can also greatly improve the appearance of your skin and lessen the appearance of cellulite. Use any of the previous blends which have multi-factual uses. However, replace when treating cellulite, use Rosemary chemotype ‘Verbenone’. From injuries and surgeries, I have many scars, and this is one of my favorites uses for Rosemary verbenone. Rosemary can help to regenerate connective tissues, reducing scarring from stretch marks and other wounds. To increase its effectiveness, blend with skin healing (cicatrisant) oils. Use the following 3-4 times a day for at least 6-8 weeks. If your skin becomes irritated, stop immediately. I encourage you to use the suggested carrier oils for skin healing. One-ounce Tamanu or Trauma oil 3 drops Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis ct. verbenone 2 drops Frankincense Boswellia carterii 3 drops Helichrysum Helichrysum itlicum 2 drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia Dandruff is a condition that may be caused by one or more factors including a dry scalp, oily or greasy skin (seborrheic dermatitis), over or under shampooing, eczema, psoriasis or other similar skin issues or sensitivity to hair products (contact dermatitis). Dandruff can also be a result of a fungal infection. Although caused by many different issues, Rosemary has proven to be effective against dandruff. When blending with your shampoo, consider Rosemary ct. verbenone and add no more than 9 drops per ounce of shampoo. My recommendation is look for an unscented organic base shampoo that you can add your oil to. One of the loved uses for Rosemary, notably Rosemary Ct. Camphor, is for hair growth, specifically baldness/alopecia. Keeping dilution rates in mind, adding to your shampoo as prementioned will help encourage hair growth. Try the following blend to add to your shampoo. 3 drops Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis ct. camphor 3 drops Clary Sage Salvia sclarea 3 drops Thyme Thymus vulgaris ct. linalol 3 drops Sandalwood Santalum album or Santalum paniculatum Bronchial issues can truly be helped with this oil. Breathing in Rosemary allows the oil to penetrate the bronchial tubes, helping to ease inflammation and discomfort. Along with diffusing and the use of inhalers, you can do a steam. To do a steam, bring about a quart of water to a boil and turn it off. Allow boil to stop and carefully transfer to a heat resistant boil. Add no more than 2 drops of Rosemary essential oil. Using a small hand towel and keeping your eyes closed, cover your head and breathe in the steam. Cautious not to burn yourself. Take deep cleansing breaths. After you can let the water stand in the room the help cleanse the air. In the mornings, I love to inhale Rosemary to get me going. I have dogs, so diffusing it is out of the question which is why I love to use personal Inhalers. Because of the stimulating effects that Rosemary can have on the circulatory system and the central nervous system, it stands to reason and has been shown that it will help improve our cognitive awareness. (8) The most effective method of application is through direct inhalation. I especially like to use my inhaler when studying for chemistry exams to keep my memory sharp. *Consult your physician before you use rosemary EO if you are currently taking any medication for conditions like high blood pressure, edema or diabetes. It also can interact badly with lithium and blood thinners.* Rosemary is one the best essential oils for beating fatigue. We know Rosemary is stimulating which makes it great for mornings to “wake” up your brain by clearing it and energizing your body at the same time. I recommend the inhaler method here. When making inhalers, use no more than 15 drops or less if required. Going over the safe yet effective amount in inhalers will not bring better results, however, can lead to negative reactions. Rosemary in your diffuser in the mornings or any time of the day is another way to apply your oils. Avoid using diffusers in public settings since many can be allergic to any essential oil. • Lymphatic System-Staying Healthy

Circulatory System When we review the Lymphatic System, we first need to look at the Circulatory System and how it relates to the Lymphatic system. The body’s circulatory system is made of an intricate weave of blood vessels that transport blood throughout the body which is pumped through this system by the heart. The circulatory system delivers the blood throughout the body. So that we don’t leave out the red blood cells, they pick up oxygen and drop off carbon dioxide at the lungs. Blood is made up of plasma and formed elements. The plasma moves out of the capillaries and into the tissues. The circulatory system works in both directions, up and down. Interstitial Fluid Once out of the capillaries, this fluid surrounding the tissues is called interstitial fluid. The flow of plasma in and out of the vessels provides a means for delivering cell nutrients, and takes away cell wastes. However, not all the plasma that flows out of the capillaries flow back into the capillaries and this is where the Lymphatic system comes into play. The excess is drained out of the tissues and into the lymphatic system. When the interstitial fluid moves into the lymphatic system, it is now referred to as lymphatic fluid. Defense System Along with providing drainage for interstitial fluid, the lymphatic system plays a key role in the body’s defense system. Similar to the circulatory system, the lymphatic system consists of a series of vessels for transporting lymphatic fluid and lymphatic cells. However, unlike the circulatory system that flows both up and down throughout the body, the lymphatic system flows one direction, up. The Lymph vessels are located next to the blood vessels. There is no pump like the heart to move the lymphatic fluid around. The lymphatic system relies on the movement of the whole organism, powered by muscle contractions, to keep the lymph flowing. The lymphatic system carries its fluid in one direction, towards the heart. The lymphatic system ties into the immune system and is an intricate part of the immune system. The immune system relies on every system of the body. White Blood Cells The body is made up of trillions of living cells. When bacteria or pathogen enters the blood stream, the white blood cells surround and destroy the bad bacteria, leaving the living cell intact. The main task of our overall immune system is to know and differentiate “us” from pathogens. The plasma membranes of the body’s cells are different than those of the invaders. One of the main jobs of white blood cells is to identify the invaders. The plasma membranes have molecules that act as a unique identifier that other cells recognize. The healthy cells of your body have a unique identifier. This keeps the white blood cells from creating havoc by beating up on your own cells. In some instances, the white blood cells get confused and begin to attack the cells, referred to auto-immune syndrome or more commonly auto-immune disease. Antibodies into Action When invaders multiply quickly in the body, antibodies go into action. Lymphocytes are white blood cells (cytes) that live within the lymphatic system. There are two main types of lymphocytes, the T-cells and B-cells. The T-cells eat host (us) cells that have been invaded by viruses. The B-cells make and disperse antibodies that kill the invading viruses. The antibodies are little proteins that stick to a specific antigen and promote the destruction of that antigen. Cleaning Our Lymphatic System Lymphatic cleansing is essential for good health since the human lymphatic system plays a key role in the wellbeing of the body and sometimes needs a boost. The lymphatic system forms a core part of the body's immune system and is also responsible for bringing nutrients to as well as wastes away from cells. Maintaining a healthy immune system is vital to our health and wellbeing. There are several steps we can take to help us along. Diet and Nutrition Food that we eat can sometimes help in the smooth flow and functioning of the lymph or it can have the opposite affect by hampering the flow of lymph in the human body. To assist in cleansing the lymphatic system, you could start by trying to avoid as many foods as you can that contain chemicals, artificial flavoring agents, artificial colors, preservatives, and stabilizing agents which is often found in processed food. Avoid artificial sweeteners for “low-cal” or “diet” foods, they neither contribute to losing weight or maintain any health agenda. The more we consume food that is not fresh, the more we can congest or block the lymphatic fluid from flowing freely in the human lymphatic system. Attempt to stay away from food that isn’t easily digested. This includes food containing too much fat, animal protein, sugars and carbohydrates. Food that is sweet to taste and is white, food produced using white flour, such as white bread, white pasta, and white rice consume a lot of energy to digest, energy which could have helped clean up the lymphatic system. These food items also wreak havoc with your blood sugar levels. Lymphatic cleansing is not just about what we can do, but also about what we should not do, or, in this case, what we should not eat. In addition to the above, drink plenty of water every day. If you can drink warm water this can help dissolve certain stubborn waste products accumulated across various body parts. Drinking at least half your body weight in ounces a day is best. An example: I weight 120 lbs. I drink 60 ounces a day. It is probably the most basic form of bodily and lymphatic detoxing and one of the best. Our bodies are made up of around 70% fluid and we need to maintain that fluid level in our bodies to assist with maintaining homeostasis. Exercise This is the best form of detoxification as far as the lymphatic system is concerned. The lymphatic system is responsible for fighting infections so it’s so important to keep the lymphatic system and movement is key. Exercise helps keep the movement of lymphatic fluid at its maximum and ensures a lot of toxins are flushed out by sweating. It improves blood circulation, strengthens the heart and oxygenates cells. Exercise is the best and most natural form of lymphatic cleansing. I’ve found that a small trampoline is helpful also to get the lymphatic system flowing. Some may not be able to stand but are able to do knee and arm bends. Whether sitting or standing, these movements are helpful. The inside of our knees and at the bend of our elbows are lymph nodes that are stimulated with these movements. Herbs An important and natural support for our bodies is herbs. From astragalus, Echinacea, goldenseal, pokeroot, wild indigo root, burdock, and red clover, they are excellent herbs that will help cleanse the lymphatic system and flush out toxins accumulated in the lymph. Others herbs that can be instituted into your everyday meals are organic fresh or dried rosemary, thyme, sage, basil, and mints. All herbal products should be taken in conjunction with an organic food diet or food which is free of all chemical products and substances. You can make teas, add to your food dishes, add to salves and herbal oils. Skin Brushing This is another natural lymphatic cleansing and detoxification method which helps clean the lymph system. The lymph system contains many minute vessels that have one-way valves (upwards) which help release the waste products from various tissues. These waste products are then released from the lymphatic system into the bloodstream. Skin brushing will help move the various waste products efficiently and speedily upwards along the lymphatic system and into the blood stream, thereby cleansing the lymphatic system quickly. All you require is a regular soft bristle brush with a longish handle which will help you reach various parts of your body without straining yourself too much. It is best to do skin brushing after you've had your bath with longish strokes, moving upwards towards your heart region. Body / Lymphatic Massages Massage therapy can play a big role in health. Massage helps stimulate the lymph nodes and flush out all the waste products accumulated, as a result of cell metabolism along with excess fluid and microorganisms. The “M” Technique massage, a form of aromatic massage involving soft strokes of three, is stimulating to the lymphatic system as well as a release of emotional and mental build up. This technique is often used for bedridden patients or hospice patients. It’s a technique I love using on my clients. It brings them to a beautiful calm state as well as moving the fluid along. During manual massages, the lymphatic system is stimulated and will help facilitate the free and smooth flow of lymphatic fluid or lymph, thereby contributing to a strong immune system. Starting at the ankles and moving slowly upwards, the benefits are not only supportive to the lymph system but our overall health. Essential Oils and Lymph Inflammation Several issues can be addressed with essential oils. For lymphatic inflammation, consider a blend of Lavender Lavendula angustifolia and Juniper berry Juniperus communis added with a carrier at 2% or 18 drops per ounce of carrier. Massage along the lymphatic vessel, starting at the ankles and working up towards the heart. Using the above mentioned technique, stimulate the lymphatic system by using Cypress Cupressus sempervirens, Helichrysum Helichrysum italicum, Grapefruit Citrus paradisi, Sweet Orange Citrus sinensis or Geranium Pelargonium roseum x asperum alone or blend 2-3 and. To stimulate the nodes, consider Rosemary Rosemarinus officinalis ct. 1,8 cineole, Ravensara Ravensara aromatica, Niaouli Melaleuca quinquenervia, Pine (any) or Tea tree Melaleuca alternifolia at the node sites (see chart). Always check safety on all essential oils prior to use. In addition, to strengthen the lymphatic system, consider massaging Vetiver Chrysopogon zizanioides or Vetiver zizanioides or Tea tree Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil. Detox Bath This is one of the best detox baths along with assisting in balancing your ph and magnesium. Start with a tablespoon of jojoba oil. Add 2-3 drops of Lavender. Add your jojoba to ½ cup Epsom salts. Add your Epsom salts and ¼ cup peroxide, baking soda, and if you have it, white sage powder to your bath water. Soak for at least 20-30 minutes, making your water hot enough to sweat but not too hot as to burn the body. Rinse after in slightly cooler water to bring the body temperature back down slowly. Drink plenty of water during and after. The human lymphatic system plays a key role in maintaining and obtaining good health. Regular lymphatic cleansing and detoxing can go a long way towards improving your level of health, immunity and vitality. • Citronella Java

Citronella Java Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum essential oil can be found in many products to fight off pests, such as mosquitoes. You will also find Citronella Cymbopogon nardus. There is no documented testing on the essential oil. This may be the reason that companies carry Citronella Java. The therapeutic properties include as an anti-infectious, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-depressant, anti-spasmodic, deodorant, fungicidal as well as other uses listed throughout the article. (1) Essential oils are comprised of chemical families. Within these chemical families are the chemical components (constituents). The components within an oil is what creates the aroma as well as the therapeutic properties (action) of an oil. The aroma in Citronella is an intense lemon with sweet, woodsy undertones. Citronella is considered a top-note in the fragrancy industry. The “notes” of essential oils are the various evaporation rates that they go through; top, middle and base notes with “in between” notes. Aromatically, blending oils with the three notes lends beautiful aromas evaporating at various rates, slowly and slightly changing the aroma over time. Although Citronella has been tested non-toxic, it may induce an allergic reaction. There have been many reports of contact sensitization and dermatitis with Citronella. However, taking proper steps, you can avoid these issues. Along with your carrier oil, add one teaspoon of vitamin E oil, an antioxidant, as added protection for those with sensitive skin. The standard dilution rates outlined by Robert Tisserand for Citronella is listed below. I recommend starting low and work up to your maximum. Your threshold may be 2% and not need to use the maximum of 5%. The maximum percentages listed is for those that have normal healthy skin. Although 0.5% is recommended for 3-24 months, because weight and health of the baby plays an important role in usage, you would have to use such a minute amount, it would be void of much therapeutic action. In this case, I would turn to an oil that is considered safer for this age. Essential oils should never be used on premature babies. (2) 3-24 months 2-6 yrs. 6-15 yrs. 15+ Pregnancy 0.5% 2% 3% 5% 2% Internally and based on research, Citronella may present some drug interactions, specifically CYP2B6 drugs. This would be based on the methyl eugenol content. This can be found on the GC/MS (gas chromatography/mass spectrometry) analysis report and should be available on site with the oils you purchase. If you are on these drugs, avoid using Citronella internally. Some essential oils will also affect us internally when used externally. Citronella does not present this problem. Essential oils can be quite effective topically, working through the dermis (skin) in the same manner that patches work for hormone replacement, smoke cessation, or pain patches. Because of its unique lemony aroma, Citronella is most often used by perfumers in some of the most loved perfumes on the market. Blended with florals and woodsy oils lends a remarkable aroma. Where Can I Get this Essential Oil? It’s best to avoid purchasing oils from department stores, quick stops or drug stores. Occasionally I will see oils from companies I trust in some department stores. This is based on research I’ve previously done on a company. However, the majority found in these locations are synthetic oils passed off as “essential” oils. Essential oils that are enhanced with synthetic ingredients or synthetic oils passed off as essential oils have no therapeutic value whatsoever. My favorite companies that have analysis available on site as well as excellent service include Edens Garden, Plant Therapy, Aromatics International, and Nature’s Gift. Bacteria-There is not a one size fits all to fight bacteria. There are many strains of bacteria. When we say ‘anti-bacterial,” it does not mean it covers every possible type of bacteria. That said, Citronella can assist in eliminating some strains of bacteria, and minor infections. Citronella is not recommended for open wounds. Once your wound has scabbed over, try the following to decrease bacteria and increase healing time. There are many carriers you can choose from. I’ve chosen Calendula infused organic oil because it is tough against stubborn wound and inflammation. Calendula works well on most skin infections, cuts, punctures, scrapes, burns and chapped skin or lips. The following is 2%. Increase or decrease as needed, keeping maximum dilution rates in mind. There are no safety concerns with Helichrysum or Frankincense. One-ounce Calendula or carrier of choice 4 drops Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum 8 drops Helichrysum Helichrysum Italicum 6 drops Frankincense Boswellia carterii Apply up to 4 times a day or as needed. For more sensitive skin or concern for sensitivity, add 1 teaspoon vitamin E. Arthritis and Rheumatism Pain and Inflammation-Citronella has three major components, citronellal, geraniol and citronellol. This contributes to the strong analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties against arthritic conditions. The citronellol within the oil adds to the relief by relaxing the muscles. Apply the following to achy joints. One-ounce Tamanu oil 4 drops Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum 5 drops Balsam fir Abies balsamea 5 drops Plai Zingiber cassumunar 5 drops Juniper Berry Juniperus communis Clean Home-Citronella makes a great room deodorizer. Its anti-fungal and ant-viral properties will kill the bacteria and leave behind a beautiful lemony aroma. Fill a one-ounce glass spray bottle almost to the top with water, leaving enough room for your essential oils. Add 9 drops of essential oil. Essential oils and water do not mix and since this does not contain an emulsifier, shake well before each use and avoid spraying on skin. Make a fresh spray each time. Although essential oils may have anti-bacterial properties, there are millions of strains of bacteria and essential oils are not resistant to bacterial growth in a water-based product. Creating a Fragrance-Although there are many therapeutic uses for Citronella, it is also regarded in the fragrance industry as an excellent addition to beautiful perfumes. The following blend will uplift your mood while smelling beautiful! 5 drops Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum 5 drops Roman Chamomile Chamaemelum nobile 2 drops Ylang Ylang Cananga odorata var. genuina 3 drops Cedarwood Juniperus virginiana Cold and Flu Season-With fall upon us and winter quickly approaching, proactively preparing for cold and flu season will have you armed and ready. In our house, along with Elderberry syrup, blends are prepared to catch germs at the first sign. The following blend can be used in an inhaler or diffuser. Topically, blended with an unscented lotion or cream, can be applied to the chest and neck. For children, apply to upper backs. This keeps their little fingers out of it and is still quite effective. This is a Master blend, meaning that when you will use a blend multiple times, you will make one big enough for this use rather than open your bottles several times. Use 15 drops per inhaler or diffuser. Topically, following percentage guidelines given above. 10 drops Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum 10 Drops Cedarwood Juniperus virginiana 10 Drops Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia 15 Drops Frankincense Boswellia carterii 10 Drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia Depression-Although not its strongest suite, Citronella is a plus in blends for depression because of its ability to calm nervous conditions that are stress related and can add to depression. Depression, along with other autonomic responses, are best treated through direct inhalation. Emotion involves the entire nervous system, of course. But there are two parts of the nervous system that are especially significant. The limbic system and the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is known to be linked integrally to emotion. it is through the limbic system that the molecules from the essential oils travel through the olfactory system and is also appears to be primarily responsible for our emotional life. For stress, breathe directly from the bottle or try the previous blend that also is very effective on depression as well as stress. Digestive Tract Infections-Citronella has shown to be effective against some intestinal parasitic infections. This is due to the citronellal and geraniol, which are the two major components within the oil. (3) For internal parasites, adults only: To one tablespoon of honey, add one drop of citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum essential oil. Gentle mix and add to one-ounce warm water, stir and drink. Consult a physician prior to using to ensure your internal issue is not more serious and may require medical attention. Excess Water Weight-When dealing with common swelling, Citronella works as a diaphoretic which induces excess perspiration and may help to alleviate fluid. If Edema, the concern becomes much greater. Edema occurs from increased hydrostatic pressure, reduced osmotic pressure, fluid retention, increased vascular (vessel) permeability or a possible lymphatic obstruction. If you suspect Edema, we recommend consulting with your physician. Along with exercise, elevation when necessary, low salt diet, and plenty of water to flush kidneys, Massage with Aromatherapy can stimulate the vessels and lymphatic system, releasing fluid and reducing swelling. Our skin is put through trauma when swelling occurs. It becomes dry and irritated. I’ve added Neroli for its skin healing abilities and gentle healing carrier oils, Babassu Orbygnia Oil., along with Jojoba Simmondsia chinensis. Babassu oil is high in linolenic acids and is best used as an additive with other carriers. It’s often used in cosmetics and skin-care products. Using Babassu with Jojoba will help protect and heal the skin. The addition of essential oils that are also known for their antimicrobial properties will help to accelerate the healing actions of the Babassu oil. Apply by starting at the ankle and massaging upwards, the direction that the lymphatic system runs. Take time to massage at the lymph node sites; ankles, knees and groin area. One-half ounce Jojoba oil One-ounce Babassu oil 5 drops Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum 10 drops Juniper Berry Juniperus communis 10 drops Cypress Cupressus sempervirens 5 drops Neroli Citrus aurantium var. amara Fatigue and Increase Alertness One of the unique therapeutic actions of Citronella is its ability to calm the mind yet allow clarity and alertness. Along with other oils with similar properties, you’ll stay calm, alert and feel uplifted. Diffuse or add to an Inhaler the following drops. 5 drops Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum 5 drops Spearmint Mentha spicata 5 drops Patchouli Pogostemon cablin Free Radical Damage-Use citronella essential oil to prevent cellular damage from free radicals. Citronella is up to 22-25% percent of geraniol, which attributes to Citronella’s antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are intimately involved in the prevention of cellular damage -- the common pathway for cancer, aging, and a variety of diseases. Free radicals are molecules with unpaired electrons. They rob other cells of electrons, causing damage and contributing to many diseases. Apply after baths and before bed. One-Ounce Apricot Kernel (CP) oil 3 drops Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum 5 drops Helichrysum Helichrysum italicum 5 drops Jasmine Jasminum grandiflorum 5 drops Frankincense Boswellia carterii Headache Pain-Stress and nervous tension related headaches are quickly relieved with the use of Citronella. Try the following in an inhaler or diffuser, Adult Only: 2 drops Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum 3 drops Lavender Lavendula angustfolia 5 drops Frankincense Boswellia carterii 5 drops Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis ct. 1,8 cineole Neuralgia Discomfort-Neuralgia can be from several different underlying causes or conditions. It may be due to a damaged, weak or depressed nerve. It can cause a stabbing or burning pain, or coldness to the area. Along with Citronella, the following can help to stimulate the nerves and bring relief to the area. Rollerball applicators can be purchased from Amazon and other retailers. To a 10 ml roller ball container, add the following drops and fill with Arnica carrier oil. Apply to area as needed to relieve pain and inflammation. Avoid areas around or near eyes. 5 drops Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum 3 drops Peppermint Mentha spicata Pelvic pain can be indicative of many different health issues. We may experience pelvic pain for many different reasons throughout life and on various scales of discomfort. Finding safe, alternative relief is a plus. Research has shown that Citronella helps to ease pelvic discomfort. Depending on the cause of your pain, you can use it in a topical application or consider a Sitz bath (See my article on Sitz Baths). The following will not only lessen your pelvic pain, it will also reduce muscles spasms that may also be a contributing factor. There are several carrier choices. I chose Apricot Kernel for this recipe. Apricot kernel oil is cold pressed from the seeds of apricots. This carrier oil is a favorite of massage therapists, due to its fast absorption rate and many therapeutic properties. Its therapeutic properties include gentleness on inflamed, aging or sensitive skin. One-ounce Apricot Kernel (CP) oil 5 Drops Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum 5 Drops Roman Chamomile Chamaemelum nobile 3 Drops Spikenard Nardostachys jatamansi 5 Drops Cypress Cupressus sempervirens Freshly washed and dried skin is more receptive and will absorb more of the active components within your oils. Dry, gently massage the area, cover when possible. If you choose a Sitz bath, combine oils and use 1-5 drops per one tablespoon carrier oil. For a regular bath size, use 5-20 drops. The number of drops depends on the safety of each oil youchoose to use then the maximum safe amount that is effective. Safety first. *Depending on the strength of your dose, use no longer than 2 weeks with a week break. Reduce the chances of gaining sensitivity to an oil by varying your oils if using over a long period of time* Reduce Fevers-Citronella is a febrifuge, which simply put, means it works to help reduce fevers. A fever can rise from many issues within the body. Citronella can work as a fever reducer while it’s uplifting properties can be comforting. Try the following fever reducing blend. For those under 2 years of age, I recommend Citronella Hydrosol. Hydrosols are gentle on children and pets. The following is not recommended for children under 2 years old. One-ounce Carrier oil of choice 5 drops Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum 5 drops Palmarosa Cymbopogon martini var. motia 5 drops Laurel Leaf Laurus nobilis Apply to the neck and chest area. You can also add to a warm cloth and apply across the forward, avoiding the eyes. Relieve Stress-Citronella helps to reduce stress related conditions by calming the central nervous system (CNS). Oils alone cannot reduce your stress. Recognizing and addressing the triggers that cause stress is the first step. Along with other actions, certain essential oils can help to get you through a much less stressful day. Try a personal inhaler. Some oils may not agree with others. With a personal inhaler, you keep the aroma to yourself and the essential oil molecules go straight to your olfactory system, calming and reducing your stress level. This will also work well in a diffuser. 5 drops Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum 5 Drops Jasmine Jasminum grandiflorum 5 Vetiver Vetiveria zizanoides Repel Insects-Citronella has long been used as an insect repellant. Alone or along with other insect repellant oils, it’s good to have on hand year-round. Add 9 drops of Citronella to one-half ounce of unscented lotion and apply before going out. The following is also a beautiful aroma and used daily in the country where we live. One-ounce unscented lotion 5 drops Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum 10 drops Patchouli Pogostemon cablin 5 drops Vanilla Oleoresin 5 drops Cedarwood Juniperus virginiana Skin Health-Citronella is an antiseptic, which helps to combat microbials and reduce the possibility of infection, sepsis, or other skin impurities. Try the following in an unscented lotion to improve your skins quality. Two-Ounce Unscented Lotion 5 drops Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum 5 Patchouli Pogostemon cablin 4 Geranium Pelargonium x asperum 6 Lavender Lavendula angustifolia Smooth Muscle Spasms-As an antispasmodic, Citronella works on the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract. For various reasons, your gastrointestinal motility may be overworking, causing spasms in the stomach. The gastrointestinal tract has 5 parts; the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines. To help eases these spasms, apply the following blend counterclockwise on your abdomen. The massage along with muscle calming oils will ease the tightness and discomfort the spasms can create while calming them down. I love the following oils along with Citronella for this purpose. They lend a calming, relaxing effect throughout the body, releasing tension and stress along with calming the muscles. One-Ounce Arnica Infused oil or carrier of choice Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum Clary Sage Salvia sclarea Lavender Lavendula angustifolia Sweet Marjoram Origanum majorana Treat Anxiety-Anxiety effects over 1.5 million people in the USA over the age of 18. Citronella calms anxiety and related nervous conditions. Citronella can be diffused by adding up to 15 drops in a standard aromatherapy diffuser. Diffuse for 30-60 minutes with at least a 30-minute break in between. Because of possible negative neurological effects, it is not recommended to diffuse all night or continuously. For those times when you are out and about, you can either breathe the aroma directly from the bottle or use a personal inhaler, which holds up to 15 drops and can be purchased from Amazon and other retailers. I have found diffusers that can also be used in a vehicle. When using relaxing oils in your car diffuser, be sure they are not too strong and bring on sleepiness. You may also like the following blend. 5 drops Citronella Cymbopogon winterianus citronelliferum 5 drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia 3 drops Sweet Orange Citrus sinensis 7 drop Ruh Khus Vetiveria zizanioides Please leave a comment and let me know if this was helpful to you. • For The Love of Patchouli

Patchouli Pogostemon cablin essential oil has been used for centuries has successfully been used in Ayurvedic medicinal treatments. This remarkable oil serves many purposes in the aromatic world. The aroma is deep, exotic and beautiful. Uses of Patchouli essential oil include but certainly not limited to: Analgesic Antibacterial Antidepressant Antifungal Anti-infectious Anti-Septic Antiviral Skin and wound healer CNS (central nervous system) sedative Cooling Decongestant Deodorant Digestive and immune stimulant Febrifuge (lowers fevers) Insect repellant Reduces anxiety and depression Sexual tonic Improves skin cells ...and more! (1), (2), (3) Patchouli is mainly harvested from Indonesia and China, although Indonesia seems to be the best quality. I find most companies carry Indonesian Patchouli. Although many come from Indonesia, it’s remarkable the variances in aromas from the different locations in the region and this applies to all oils. Due to soil conditions, seed quality, climate, altitude, growing conditions, harvesting, the care during distillation, bottling and storage, it can all play a part in the resulting quality of an essential oils. These are all factors that conscientious suppliers pay close attention to. A change in the climate can also change the makeup of an oil. Patchouli is similar to Jasmine in its warmth which adds to its’ comfort as an anti-inflammatory. Patchouli is both calming but with a soft stimulating energy to it. It tends to leave you feeling uplifted, yet calm. The aroma is a deep earthy aroma, with an exotic undertone and an oil loved in aphrodisiac blends. It is considered a “safe” oil topically, although like all oils, it still must be diluted accordingly to be safely used. Although there are exceptions, oils that are similar tend to go well together. Patchouli also blends nicely with florals and citrus oils as well as other exotic type oils. Internally there may be a concern of drug interactions and possible inhibiting of blood clotting. Avoid using Patchouli orally. *Patchouli is often adulterated. For this reason, we suggest using a company that provides GC/MS analysis reports.* 1. Improve Digestive Health Patchouli has many therapeutic properties, including as a digestive stimulant. Patchouli is also known to assist with infectious intestinal colitis, a disease best addressed by a Clinical Aromatherapist trained in Aromatic medicine. As a digestive stimulant, add 4 drops Patchouli to ½ ounce unscented lotion or carry of choice. Blend well. Counterclockwise, gently apply to abdominal area. Apply every few hours to relieve digestive discomfort. Patchouli has a very relaxing aroma and affect on the limbic system. In a calm state, it helps to relax the abdominal muscles while calming the disturbances within the digestive tract. Patchouli is safe for all ages (other than premature babies.). For children under two, I would suggest 1 drop per ½ ounce carrier oil. Their little bodies are more receptive than ours and require a lesser dilution. We find this true with medication as well. We must adjust our dosages according to their little bodies. *Because of Patchoulis antiplatelet aggregation, it’s discouraged during breastfeeding as it could pass through breastmilk* 2. Improve Brain Power Patchouli has remarkable effects on stress related problems and can be stimulating in high doses. It sharpens our minds, helping to process thoughts more efficiently and more objectively. (4) Because of its gentle nature, its synergistic blend of components is uplifting without being over stimulating. 3. Patchouli’s Powerful Aroma Patchouli has a soft, earthy, woodsy, sweet yet spicy aroma. Patchouli is known as an aphrodisiac with an exotic and stimulating aroma. Use the following to spice up your evening. Using a 2-ounce fine mist spray bottle, fill with 1 ounce high-proof alcohol such as Everclear (not rubbing alcohol), and 1-ounce distilled water or Patchouli Hydrosol. Add 10-27 drops Patchouli essential oil. Shake well, spay sheets. Let air dry. Before bed, shake well and spray room. You can also diffuse up to one hour before bed. This can be stored in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks. If using over a long term, a preservative would need added to avoid bacteria and fungal growth. 4. Repel Insects I featured this fool proof recipe in my Eucalyptus article. My daughter’s wedding was in October next to our lake in Louisiana. Our concern was the heat and the mosquitoes. The climate worked out perfect and as we handed out our little containers of bug cream, the night was a success. Not a single complaint of mosquitoes. It’s the perfect cream for the whole family. Because of children, avoid other chemo types of Eucalyptus. Citriodora is considered safe for children. Bug Out Cream 1-ounce unscented cream or lotion 10 drops Patchouli Pogostemon cablin 5 drops Vanilla Oleoresin Vanilla planifolia 5 drops Cedarwood Juniperus virginiana 2 Drops Lemon Eucalyptus Citriodora Directions: Add all oils to cream or lotion and blend thoroughly. Do a small skin patch test prior to use. Reminder: Although Patchouli, like many oils, are not known as irritants, keep in mind that everyone’s chemistry is unique and it is impossible to know every outcome. 5. Enhance Creativity Patchouli’s psychological effects are grounding, and harmonizing. It enriches are mind and creativity. There are very few oils that improve with age, but Patchouli is one of the exceptions. Over time, it becomes even more warm and exotic with its rich and deep aroma. While in your creative moments, use up to 15 drops or according to your diffuser directions and diffuse up to one hour and enjoy the mind opening affects of this beautiful under rated oil. 6. Activate Your Chakra Patchouli has been suggested as best for those with a deficiency of Qi-energy in the spleen-pancreas and as a result, suffer from side effects including fatigue, loose bowels and abdominal distention. Patchouli helps to support the immune system while balancing the body. Over exhaustion from work and anxiety can leave a body weak and prone to infection. (5) Quiet Moments 1/2-ounce carrier of choice 3 drops Patchouli Pogostemon cablin 1 drop Roman Chamomile Chamaemelum nobile Combine and gently massage in either the abdominal area, temples (avoiding eyes), or mid back area. Although the feet are the least permeable, massaging them can be beneficial to our health as well. 7. Experience Calm Meditation Take advantage of patchouli’s natural calming and soothing properties while you meditate. It naturally calms your mind, facilitating deep, relaxing, rejuvenating meditation. Try the following blend next time you meditate. Meditative Diffuser Blend 5 drops Patchouli Pogostemon cablin 2 drops Sweet Orange Citrus senisis 3 drops Frankincense Boswellia papyrifera 2 drops Clary Sage Salvia sclarea 1 drops Ylang Ylang Cananga odorata var. geruina Settle into your favorite meditation place, turning lights down low, adding candles, pillows, whatever makes you the most comfortable. Add oils to your diffuser and diffuse up to one hour as you meditate. Reaching a deep meditative state takes some practice, but once it is achieved, along with beautiful oils with meditative properties, you can reach a state of peace and renew-ness. This is one of my favorite “my” times. 8. Revive Your Love Life Rejuvenate or enhance your sensuality with a little patchouli EO. When your mind gets stuck in a rut, worrying about issues at work or home, your libido tends to suffer. Patchouli oil helps you get out of that rut. Patchouli works on the endocrine system as a stimulant, easing feelings of detachment from your sensuality. It’s warming and is a relaxing aphrodisiac and may help those with frigidity. 9. Relieve Depression Various psychiatric disorders can be treated by Patchouli aromatherapy. Patchouli oil influences cerebral functions including calming, anti-depressive, sedative and uplifting. (7) The following blend is perfect for those low moments. Hope Blend 5 drops Patchouli Pogostemon cablin 5 Drops Sweet Orange Citrus sinensis 5 Drops Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis ct. verbenone Blend. You can add to your diffuser or add all drops to 2 ounces unscented lotion and apply to neck and chest. 10. Reduce Inflammation Patcholol (Patchouli alcohol), the main constituent within Patchouli essential oil, has been tested numerous times and has proven to have strong anti-inflammatory properties against various acute inflammatory responses. (8) Patchouli is non-sensitive and non-irritating. Patchouli promotes healing of wounds. It’s used in Ayurvedic medicine for healing skin and scar tissue as well as sores, eczema and a host of other inflamed skin-related issues. Try the following blend for pain and inflammation: Hand Cream for Pain and Inflammation 1-ounce unscented lotion or carrier oil* 6 drops Patchouli Pogostemon cablin 4 drops Myrrh Commiphora myrrha 2 drops Plai Zingiber cassumunar 4 drops Helichrysum Helichrysum italicum Blend and use as needed. *Many carrier oils are anti-inflammatory. You could consider Apricot Kernel CP (cold pressed), Arnica Infused Oil. Babassu oil, Calendula Infused Organic Oil, Cranberry See oil, Emu oil or Pomegranate See oil. 11. Prevent Bacterial Infection As prementioned, Patchouli has excellent anti-inflammatory properties that attribute to healing wounds. Diluted properly and used after the wound has scabbed over, Patchouli will induce quick healing and scar reducing for most wounds. Wound Healing 1-ounce Carrier oil 4 drops Patchouli Pogostemon cablin 4 drops Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia 3 drops Lemon Citrus limon 3 drops Geranium Pelatgonium roseum x asperum 4 drops Helichrysum Helichrysum italicum Apply every 3-4 hours on closed wounds. 12. Combat Fungal Infections Patchouli has been proven effective on Candida and other fungal infections. (9) Ten essential oils were tested against twelve fungi (3 yeast-like and 9 filamentous) by the disc diffusion method. Out of the 10 essential oils, all twelve fungi were inhibited by seven oils including patchouli. (10) *Tamanu Oil is my pick of carrier oils for fungal infections. It’s also effective in treating scars, stretch marks (fades stretch marks with great results), minor wounds, skin irritations, rashes, bedsores and many other skin concerns. promotes new tissue formation, speeds up healing and healthy skin growth, is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and, of course, why we love it for this blend, it is antifungal. Anti-fungal Healing Oil 1-ounce Tamanu Oil 10 drops or Patchouli Pogostemon cablin 5 drops Helichrysum Croatia italicum 5 drops Frankincense Boswellia carterii 8 drops Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia Our suggestion is to apply every 3-4 hours as needed. Applying to clean dry skin will give best results. 13. Treat Dry, Itchy Skin Because of it’s anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, Patchouli is known for its healing skin therapeutic properties. There are so many carrier oils that are great for dry, itchy skin. You can consider combining carrier oils such as Baobab and Jojoba wax. Jojoba protects the skin while allowing it to breathe while the Baobab oil is very penetrating and deeply. It softens dry skin and paired with skin loving, healing and nourishing essential oils, you can heal and ease itchy dry skin. Baobab oil is known to restore your beautiful skin and re-moisturize the epidermis. Dry Skin Relief Two-ounce carrier of choice 5 drops or Patchouli Pogostemon cablin 5 drops Helichrysum Croasia italicum 9 drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia 5 drops Carrot Seed Daucus carota Apply as desired. 14. Improve Your Skin We know from previous comments that Patchouli is beautiful for our skin because of its healing properties to our skin and soft tissue. Some beautiful carrier oils for improving your skin is can include Pomegranate seed oil which has anti-inflammatory properties, is a skin regenerator, moisturizer, and is excellent for dry, damaged and aged skin. You could also consider using Rose hip carrier oil. Rose hip oil is remarkable for mature, damaged, and irritated skin. Skin Healer 1-ounce carrier of choice 4 drops Patchouli Pogostemon cablin 4 drops Frankincense Boswellia carterii 6 drops Helichrysum Helichrysum italicum 2 drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia Apply nightly before bed on clean dry skin. Suggestion: Do a small skin patch test first by placing a small amount on the inside of your wrist. If no reaction within 10-15 minutes, your product should be safe to use. 15. Fight Acne Want to stop acne in its track and heal your scars? Patchouli is perfect for acne treatment. With anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties, Patchouli is perfect in acne blends. Patchouli also has a beautiful cooling effect to the skin. Blend with Aloe Jelly (Not Gel) and apply as needed. Acne Relief ½-ounce Aloe Jelly 5 drops Patchouli Pogostemon cablin 3 drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia 6 drops Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia Dap on acne to dry and heal. Repeat as needed. 16. Eliminate Excess Water Weight Because we discourage ingestion of essential oils without training in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of essential oils, we encourage you to utilize the parent plant, which offers the same diuretic properties that the essential oil does, although milder and without the concerns that come with internal use of essential oils. Patchouli leaf tea can act as a diuretic, so if you are already taking some form of diuretic, you may wish to avoid it. It can also soothe the digestive system. 17. Get a Good Night’s Sleep Patchouli is a CNS (central nervous system) depressant or nervine and works great in sleep blends. It’s cooling and stimulates the immune system as you sleep. Try the following blend. Sleep Tight Chest and Neck Rub 4-ounce unscented lotion 15 drops Patchouli Pogostemon cablin 15 drops Sweet Marjoram Origanum majorana 15 drops Frankincense Boswellia carterii 15 drops Vetiver Chrysopogon zizanioides or Ruh Khus Vetiveria zizanioides References: Tisserand, Robert; The Art of Aromatherapy; Patchouli, pgs. 262-263 Mojay, Gabriel; Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit; Patchouli, pgs. 106-107 Buckles, Jane; Clinical Aromatherapy; Patchoulol; pg. 48 The Aromatherapy Practitioner Reference Manual Mojay, Gabriel; Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit; Patchouli, pg.; 107 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Patchouli+essential+oil+depression Perry, N.; Perry, E. • Combating Allergies with Essential Oils

What Are Allergies? An allergy is the body’s immune systems rejection of a substance or foreign invader. In reaction to the foreign invasion of allergens, the body sends out a group of white blood cells called T-cells to fight off the invaders. In skin allergic reactions, this causes redness and irritation. Your risk of developing an allergy isn’t necessarily related to something being natural or chemical, but instead it can be related to your family’s health history. Seasonal allergies and their related symptoms are different. The signs and symptoms can include runny nose, sneezing, itchy, red or irritated (may seem dry) eyes and notably can include skin reactions. Allergies can make you feel drained and unable to participate in outdoor activities and, when severe enough, can break down our immune system and play havoc on our lymphatic system. By preparing ahead of time, you can help to combat the symptoms associated with allergies. Seasonal allergies start in the spring, for some states as early as February and continue through early summer. Our first concern is tree pollination, which begins yearly in the spring. We get a little reprieve before the late spring to early summer grass pollination begins. Then in late summer and early fall, we are fighting ragweed. In the more tropical climates grass may continue to pollinate throughout most of the year. When plants pollinate can also vary depending on changes in usual temperatures or an unusually rainy season. Ragweed can grow almost anywhere and most heavily in the Midwest and the Eastern Coast and it is the biggest for allergies. Once it ragweed starts blooming, it will release pollen from August through November. In many areas of the country, ragweed pollen levels are highest in early to mid-September. Aside from Ragweed, other concerns include underbrush burning, Cockleburs xanthium, Lamb’s quarters Chenopodium album (delicious and nutritious), Pigweed Amaranthus retroflexus (another edible and nutritional food), Sagebrush Asteraceae, Mugwort Artemisia vulgaris, and Russian thistle Echinops exaltatus, or commonly known as Tumbleweed. There are many other factors, such as high humidity or heat that may heighten your symptoms. Ways to help control your allergies may include checking the weather channel or on the internet for the pollen that day in your area, keeping windows and doors closed, moisture level down to avoid mold and mildew growth which are contributors and, although rain washes away pollen (all that yellow is gone, after all), pollen counts can sky rocket after rain. When possible, avoid outside activities on dry windy days. On pollen days, take a shower to wash away any possible pollen on you or in your hair. It’s not a good sleeping partner. If you are like me and work outside often, where protective gear such as a NIOSH-rated 95 filter mask, especially if mowing or other activities that stir up the pollen. Essential Oils' Role in Fighting Allergies Essentials oils play a terrific role in fighting off or preventing various allergy symptoms and in some cases, help rid the allergy itself. Many essential oils have strong therapeutic antimicrobial properties to combat airborne microbials as well as bacteria of many strains. The can also support and boost the immune system, work as anti-histamines and open congested airways. Those who do not want to take RX medication or seasonal allergy medications may find great relief by inhalation of essential oils. I've searched and have chosen my pick of essential oils that may help you control or, in some cases, rid you of your allergies. Since everyone is unique, one remedy cannot work for all. The oils I’ll introduce you to seem to work for most. Play around and find what suites your uniqueness and personal chemical makeup. Many of the following suggested oils are excellent immune stimulators, have strong anti-infectious, anti-microbial, and antihistamine properties, depending on the individual oil. But they can also offer emotional, mental or spiritual support. Applications to Consider There are several applications for using essential oils; diluted topically, diffusion, steam inhalation or inhalation through inhalers. When fighting allergies, inhalation seems to be the best application for essential oils. Diffusion and inhalers work great. Diffusion can be used at home. In a public forum, there is always the risk of someone having an allergic reaction, even when using what we consider "safe" essential oils. Although diffusion is the safest mode of application, some oils come with precautions to consider. Many oils are unsafe to use around animals, especially cats. Many are unsafe with children, especially the very young. As a precaution and to avoid possible neurological side effects, it’s best to avoid full strength diffusion longer than 30/60-minute intervals with a 30/60-minute break. All night diffusion is discouraged. At a low dilution rate and with oils that present no concern, diffusing 1-3 drops for longer periods is considered safe. It's up to the individual to know the safety concerns that may come with each oil. Steam inhalation is a quick relief for congestion. Bring a quart of water to a high steam (not boiling). Once your water is heated, turn it off and carefully transfer to a heat resistant bowl, add 1-2 drops of essential oil(s), cover your head like a tent to keep steam in, and keeping your eyes closed, take deep cleansing breaths. After, let the water stand to release the rest of the essential oil molecules into the air to help combat airborne microbials. It is unsafe to add more than the recommended amount of oils. Inhalers are quite easy to assemble, take no more than 15 drops of essential oil and last for several weeks, depending on usage. You can also use your blends topically to enhance the effect. Night time application on the chest and neck will allow you to inhale as you drift into the night, giving you added protection. I do this by adding my blends to a nice unscented lotion or a carrier oil that compliments the skincare of the oils. For those that suffer from skin allergies, we have those covered too. Diffusing and inhalation can certainly help, especially if your skin allergies are related to your seasonal or inherited allergies. Topical applications using selected essential oils and carriers that compliment blends for skin healing properties can reduce and may even eliminate skin allergies. When looking at supportive essential oils for allergies, we look for essential oils that fight allergy pathogens and associated symptoms, support the immune system and help open airways. Of course, essential oils come with the added benefits of having other therapeutic actions that can keep us healthy and support us emotionally. Hydrosols are a good place to start for children, especially if you are unsure of the safety of an oil. Hydrosols are distilled specifically for their waters and therapeutic actions. It’s a misconception that all companies sell the water left behind after essential oil distillation when many distill for this very purpose. The aromas of hydrosols are much lighter than their essential oil counterparts. In addition, in some cases, the aroma may not even smell the same as the essential oil. However, the therapeutic benefits are present. Hydrosols are perfect for small children and pets, where the harsher oils need to be avoided and are often under estimated in their powerful actions. If you choose to use topical application, suggested maximums will be noted where necessary. However, I recommend following up on each oil you choose to use in your Aromatic life. The Oils 1. Bergamot Citrus bergamia (FCF), like all citrus oils, contains d-Limonene, a component that is known for its strong supportive actions to the immune system, acting as an antispasmodic by calming spastic coughs. Blending with oils such as Eucalyptus (active against pathogens) adds an extra punch. Oils with Limonene can cause skin sensitization, especially if oxidation occurs. This can be avoided by keeping your oils in airtight bottles, in a refrigerator, out of heat and air. For the skin, blending with skin friendly oils lessens the chances of reaction. Skin friendly oils include Lavender Lavendula angustifolia, any Helichrysum, Cedarwood Juniperus virginiana, Patchouli Pogostemom cablin, Sandalwood Santalum album and Vetiver Vetiveria zizanoides and are some nice choices. Adding an anti-oxidant such as Vitamin E will also increase the avoidance of your product oxidizing. 2. Chamomile German Matricaria recutita is an anti-histaminic as well as an anti-allergenic. It’s shown to have anti-viral properties and may help open your airways, which often becomes a symptom with allergies. The component Chamazulene is present in German Chamomile and is an antihistaminic. There are no safety concerns. 3. Helichrysum Italicum (Corsica) contains neryl acetate, an airborne antimicrobial, analgesic, antioxidant, anti- inflammatory, antibacterial, antispasmodic, antiviral, and most importantly, anti- allergenic. Skin or seasonal allergy symptoms can include itching, swelling, and discomfort. Helichrysum can relieve these symptoms that can manifest from allergies. Helichrysum has no documented safety concerns. 4. Juniper berry Juniperus communis Often acne can be a reaction from allergies. Juniper serves as an excellent as astringent due to its antiseptic actions. It’s skin healing, anti-inflammatory, cleanses and helps to increase the healing, is an immune stimulant, and activates white blood cells. No safety concerns, although if oxidized, it can irritate the skin. 5. Lemon Citrus limon, like all citrus, is high in d-limonene. Lemon is another great astringent as well as an antioxidant, skin penetration enhancer, anti-bacterial, and an immune stimulator. Skin penetration enhancers helps other essential oil constituents along that normally penetrate the skin. Just like all citrus, it’s supportive to the immune system. Follow previous cations for citrus oils. 6. Lavender Lavendula angustifolia is an anti-allergenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, supports the immune system, skin healing, decongestant and more. It blends well with German Chamomile for allergies, with Tea Tree and/or Thyme ct. linalool for infections (including fungal infections and candida) and with Helichrysum italicum for bruising, wounds and skin healing. No safety concerns for Lavender. Don't confuse Lavender with Spike Lavender, which does have safety concerns. 7. Niaouli Melaleuca quinquenervia ct. 1,8 cineole is distilled from the leaves of the Niaouli tree, a member of the myrtle family, that grows in Madagascar. Niaouli has several different chemotypes which should be indicated by the ‘ct’ when listed and on the bottles. Niaouli is excellent for supporting healthy lungs and airways, asthma, eases coughs and chronic bronchitis. Niaouli's components help to combat allergies and related symptoms as well as support the immune system. The safety notes I have researched include a caution with asthmatics and for maximum usages, for 3-24 months old, 0.5% maximum, 2-6 years old, maximum of 1%, 6-15 years old, 2% maximum and 15 plus years old Tisserand suggests maximum of 5% and last, those that are pregnant, a maximum of 2%. This oil is often adulterated so only purchase from a company that has gc/ms analysis reports available onsite. 8. Orange (sweet) Citrus senisis, like all citrus oils, contains high quantities of the component d-Limonene which is supportive to the immune system as well as activates white blood cells. Sweet Orange is a skin penetrator enhancer and is a great addition to topical applications. Sweet Orange is not phototoxic as is most citrus oils. As noted, oils with Limonene can oxidize easily. To avoid oxidation, follow proper storage and when used in a product, add an antioxidant such as the great Vitamin E, between 0.1-0.2% per ounce of product. 9. Palmarosa Cymbopogon martini var. motia is an airborne antimicrobial. Palmarosa is over 70% in the component geraniol, an anti-fungal, airborne antimicrobial, cicatrisant as well as an anti-inflammatory. Palmarosa is an emotionally supportive oil by calming and uplifting. Palmarosa has no safety concerns. 10. Patchouli Pogostemom cablin is a great choice for fungal related allergies. As to the respiratory system, allergic asthma may be induced when fungal spores (which are smaller than pollen grains) are inhaled into the lungs. Using Patchouli in an inhaler may help reduce the chances of an allergic reaction. Patchouli has been shown to stimulate the immune system, is anti-bacterial, and has a cooling effect which is nice on skin allergies. It’s great in insect repellent sprays and topical rubs. Patchouli is also an anti-inflammatory and can ease topical inflammations caused by allergies. Patchouli has no known safety concerns. 11. Ravensara Leaf Ravensara aromatica requires a low dilution but packs a powerful punch against allergies. Topically, Tisserand recommend for those 15 the topical maximum of 1%, 6-15 years old, 0.5 and those 2-6, maximum of 0.25%. Ravensara should not be used on those under the age of 2. When blending with this oil for children, my recommendation is 0.0625% or less, depending on the child. Ravensara is best avoided during pregnancy. 12. Rose absolute Rosa damacena is an antispasmodic and works as a bronchial dilator. Citronellol has direct relaxing action on vascular smooth muscles. Studies have shown that Rose has antispasmodic effects. The main component of the absolute, phenylethyl alcohol, alleviates histamine-induced bronchoconstriction (in vitro), and has shown potential use as an anti-asthmatic agent. Rose absolute's maximum recommendations 0.25% for 3-24 months, 1% for 2-6 years old, 2% for 6-15 years old, 15 years old plus is maximum 2.5 and those pregnant, no more than 1%. These percentages do not apply to Rose otto, which is far less. 13. Sweet Marjoram Origanum marjorana contains the component Terpinene-4-ol and is often used in blends created to relieve or alleviate skin inflammation and allergies as well as heal the skin. It serves as a powerful sleep aid. I use it often in my sleep blends. Sweet Marjoram can be used with other oils to relieve constriction from your bronchial tubes, and seems to be especially helpful for those with bronchial asthma. Sweet Marjoram suggested maximum use is 3-24 months old is 0.5%, 2-6 years old is 2%, 6-15 years old is 3%, 15 plus maximum is 55 and those that are pregnant, the maximum suggested is 2%. Sweet Marjoram presents no safety concerns. To avoid topical irritation, suggested maximum is the standard. drops per ounce of carrier oil. Sweet Marjoram has no known safety concerns. 14. Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia is an antispasmodic and bronchial dilator. It’s great in a steam to keep congestion and infection under control. Most respiratory conditions can benefit dramatically from the use of Tea tree oil, including those related to allergies. Tea tree is a skin healer, decongestant, eases constricted bronchial airways as well as coughs, is an immune stimulant, and works great with oils high in the component (constituent) linalool. Tea Tree is prone to oxidize, as are citrus. When using oils that may oxidize in your products, you can add Vitamin E, a great antioxidant between 0.1-0.2% per ounce. Here are a few of my favorite blends for fighting allergies that can be used in the various applications outlined. If you choose topical use, 9 drops to one-ounce carrier is approximately 1% . We say approximate since orifices can vary depending on the company you purchase your essential oils from. Most use the standard size which I've based the 9 drops per ounce on. Check safety on each oil if using on children, those who are pregnant, nursing, taking medications, elderly or other health issues. These are a few allergy blends that have worked for me. Blend one • 5 drops Orange (sweet) Citrus senisis • 5 drops Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis ct. camphor • 5 drops Sweet Marjoram Origanum majorana • 3 drops Palmarosa Cymbopogon martini var. motia For children under 10 years of age, replace with Rosemary Rosmarinus ct. camphor with Rosemary Rosmarinus officianalis ct. verbenone. Blend Two • 5 drops Bergamot Citrus bergamia • 5 drops Sweet Marjoram Origanum marjorana • 8 drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia Safe for all ages, following appropriate dilution rates. Blend Three • 6 drops Chamomile German Matricaria recutita • 6 drops Helichrysum Italicum (Corsica) • 6 drops Sweet Orange Citrus senisis Safe for all ages, following appropriate dilution rates. Blend Four • 5 drops Bergamot Citrus bergamia • 8 drops Patchouli Pogostemom cablin • 5 drops Sweet Marjoram Origanum marjorana Patchouli: Caution if breastfeeding. Blend Five • 5 drops Niaouli Melaleuca quinquenervia ct 1,8 cineole • 5 drops Juniper berry Juniperus communis • 8 drops Sweet Orange Citrus senisis Niaouli: caution with asthmatics. Avoid if pregnant and with children under 10 years of age. Based on the information provided, now it’s your turn to get creative with your blends, keeping in mind dilution rates and safety precautions provided. 1. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0378874111003941 German chamomile 2. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8893526 Patchouli (full text upon request) 3. • Safely Use Your Oregano Essential Oil

When we think of essential oils, we often don’t think of the herbs of essential oils. Oregano Origanum vulgare essential oil is steam distilled from the flowers and leaves of the plant and used to treat colds/flu, inflammation, yeast infections, bacterial infections, fungal infections, allergies, painful menstrual cycles, parasites, respiratory problems and pain. It’s also a powerful microbial. Often people confuse Oregano oil with Oregano essential oil. Oregano oil is a base oil that has been infused with Oregano and is gentle. Oregano essential oil comes with a host of safety concerns. But when used wisely, it is a great essential oil to have on hand. Oregano essential oil is from the Phenols chemical family. Phenols are one of two (Aldehydes) chemical families in essential oils that come with safety concerns. They are some of the strongest microbial oils. The concern with Oregano oil is with the two of the constituents (components) with the chemical family, thymol and carvacrol (the majority) making up about 65% of the oils makeup. (1) But with a few safety steps we will outline as we go along, you can reap the benefits without the safety issues being a concern. 1. Treat Skin Infections Oregano essential oil has shown anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, tissue remodeling and immunomodulatory properties which makes Oregano a great oil for your skin; when used properly. The study concluded the following: “We suggest that OEO, with carvacrol as the major active component, is a promising candidate for use in skin care products with anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties”. (2) Oregano comes with some concerns and with oils that come with concerns, we approach them with caution so we can enjoy them without the possibility of creating irritation and in turn, cause sensitization to the oil. There are three main factors that will determine skin reactivity and no matter the type of reaction, they will all involve the following three: Dose metrics (quantity and concentration of the substance) Dose of percutaneous (skin) absorption of the substance Degree of reaction between the substance and the immune system. (3) With Oregano, for normal adult skin, Robert Tisserand recommends a topical maximum of 1.1% or approximately 10 drops per ounce of carrier. This is for healthy adult skin. The susceptibility of the individual is also taken into consideration. Also consider the following: Hazards: (Internally) there are concerns for drug interactions; inhibits blood clotting, embryotoxicity. Topically the concerns are with skin irritation (low risk); mucous membrane irritation (moderate risk). Contraindications all routes for those that are pregnant and/or breastfeeding. Topically Tisserand cautions using on hypersensitive skin, diseased or damaged skin and on children under the age of 2 years old. Cautions orally include those that are on diabetic medication, anticoagulant medications, recently had major surgery, peptic ulcers, hemophilia or any other bleeding disorders. (page 376-Tisserand) Keeping safety in mind, Oregano is wonderful in blends to treat skin irritations. Using Oregano, we can create a healing oil for Psoriasis, eczema, acne, pimples and other skin irritations and inflammation. Skin Irritations 1-ounce carrier oil (*see below) 2 drops Oregano Origanum vulgare 6 drops Roman Chamomile Chamaemelum nobile 4 drops Neroli Citrus aurantium var. amara 8 drops Sandalwood Santelum album Along with the Oregano, we’ve used gentle essential oils. When using essential oils that may be irritants, blending with skin friendly oils reduces the possibility of a reaction to the blend. If pregnant, caution with Neroli. *Two considerations of carriers for this recipe could be Apricot Kernel CP (cold pressed) which is wonderful on prematurely aging skin, sensitive and inflamed and it absorbs easily into the skin or Carrot seed oil. Carrot seed is great for premature aging, itching, burning, dryness, psoriasis, eczema, rejuvenates the skin, reduces scars. 2. Improve Mouth and Digestive Health Because of its irritating properties and safety concerns, I don’t recommend Oregano essential oil for oral use, unless under the advisement of a Clinical Aromatherapist trained in internal use. However, Oregano oil, much gentler than essential oil, is a great alternative for oral and internal use. It carries the same properties, and although not as potent, it is still every effective. It does not come with the same risks as the essential oil which allows you to repeatedly use it over a longer period of time to ease symptoms without the same safety concerns. There are several methods of using Oregano herb that is quite effective in addressing digestive issues. You can infuse 1 teaspoon of fresh or dried Oregano herb in a cup of boiling water for 10 minutes. Drinking a cup before, during and after your meal is soothing and relieves various digestive issues. You can also do a fluid extract which can be made by combining one-part herb with one-part fluid. For example, you would use 250 grams of herb to 250 ml of a high-grade alcohol (Not rubbing alcohol). The ratio of herbs can very from 3(fluid):1(herb) to 8:1. What ratio you choose depends on the herb and the potency you are going for. (4) One great use for the infusions and extracts is for Candida albicans. Candida albicans is a type of yeast that is a common member of the human gut flora. It does not proliferate outside the human body. It is detected in the gastrointestinal tract and mouth in 40-60% of healthy adults. (5) If you so choose to use Oregano essential oil, repeated uses orally or internally should not exceed 7-10 days due to the concern for possible hepato-toxicity. (6) 3. Relieve Sore Muscles Oregano essential oil is relaxing to the muscles, it helps ease rheumatoid arthritis, and eases aches and pains of daily use of muscles. The following blend is great to have on hand after a hard workout. We’ve kept out Oregano at a very safe low dilution so we can reap the benefits and stay safe. Please keep in mind previously mentioned safety concerns when using Oregano essential oil. Oregano is not for those pregnant, nursing, babies, small children and those with sensitive skin. Do a small skin patch test prior to using Oregano essential oil. After diluting, apply a small amount to your wrist where the skin is thin. Wait 10 minutes. If no reaction, you should be able to safely use your blend. Muscle Aches and Pains One-Ounce Arnica Infused Oil (or other carrier) 2 drops Oregano Origanum vulgare 5 drops Engleman Spruce Picea engelmanii 5 drops Siberian Fir Abies sibirica 5 drops Hemp Sativa Using a carrier that is also great on sore muscles gives us extra healing power. It also adds another layer of protection to the skin when it is a skin healing carrier oil. For this, I recommend Arnica. Arnica Infused Oil is often applied externally on unbroken skin or to treat sore muscles and joints as well as bruising and sprains and strains. Try making a salve for arthritic conditions with the oils above. Arnica is a rubefacient meaning it does its work by bringing more blood to the injured area causing a slight irritation. To learn how to make a salve, check out my YouTube video. *Stretching cold muscles before a workout is not always best. Stretching after a workout will help keep muscles pliable and lessen the discomfort after an intense workout. After a good stretch and warm shower when our skin is more receptive, apply your blend* 4. Relieve Joint Pain As with muscle pain, Oregano is excellent in easing joint pain. Using the previously mentioned carrier oil will be most effective. Try the following blend to use achy joints. Joint Pain 1-ounce Arnica infused oil (see above) 2 drops Oregano Origanum vulgare 7 drops Plai Zingiber cassumunar 7 drops Engleman spruce 2 drops b-Caryophellane constituent (can be purchased at https://desrosiersintl.com/) Apply 3-4 times a day, especially after showering when the skin is clean and warm and most receptive. 5. Treat Athlete’s Foot Oregano is a fungicidal and blended with other oils with similar properties, can help to combat athlete’s foot. Try the following: Athlete’s Foot *1-ounce Tamanu oil 2 drops Oregano Origanum vulgare 5 drops Geranium Pelargonium odorantissimum 5 drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia 5 drops Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia *Tamanu Oil is a great antifungal carrier oil. It also treats scars, stretch marks (fades stretch marks with great results), minor wounds, skin irritations, rashes, bedsores and many other skin concerns. Tamanu promotes new tissue formation, accelerating healing and healthy skin growth, is an anti-inflammatory, and an anti-bacterial. 6. Get Rid of Nail Fungus Following the previous recipe, apply 3-4 times a day for at least 7-10 days. Avoid nail polish as it blocks moisture and creates the perfect setting for nail fungal infections. 7. Cure Ringworm Ringworm of the body is a fungal infection that develops on the top layer of your skin. Unfortunately, it is highly contagious and can easily pass to others. You’ll develop round itchy, scaly, red patches. Ringworm is simply a fungal infection. Athlete’s foot is ringworm of the feet. If it spreads to your groin area, it is referred to as jock itch. Follow the previous blend and avoid contact with others until it has cleared. *Do not use oregano oil within 2 weeks of a scheduled surgery* 8. Remove Warts Oregano essential oil has been noted to be effective on warts. Blend 1 drop of oregano essential oil with 1 tablespoon of carrier and apply 3-4 times a day. It’s best to soak, cleanse and dry thoroughly before applying. Depriving the wart of oxygen will eradicate it more quickly. Be sure NOT to get the essential oil on the surrounding skin. 9. Get Rid of Parasites Oregano essential oil is an anti-parasitic. Following the recommendations outlined in our section on mouth and digestive health, may help rid the body of parasites. 10. Treating Head Lice Seems like every young mother gets to face their children bringing home head lice. There are several steps we can do to help prevent the passing of head lice. For little girls, keeping their hair in braids or up in a pony tail helps. As a young mother of three daughters, I found using hair spray on my daughters’ hair helped to keep them from attaching to the hair follicles. To treat head lice, try the following blend outline by Dr. Valnet. (7) 3-ounce salve base (see my video) 15 drops Oregano Origanum vulgare 15 drop Lemongrass Cymbopogon citratus 15 drops Thyme Thyme ct. linalool 15 drops Geranium Pelargonium odorantissimum 11. Relieve Sinus Congestion from Colds Oregano helps to relieve symptoms from colds and flu. Cough, Cold and Congestion Blend 2 ounces unscented cream 2 Drops Oregano Origanum vulgare 5 Drops Cedarwood Juniperus virginiana 5Drops Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia 5 Drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia 5 Drops Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis ct. 1,8 cineole Apply to chest and neck, especially at night. *Talk to your healthcare provider if you are being treated for diabetes or have a bleeding disorder prior to using oregano oil * 12. Treat Respiratory Infections Because of Oreganos’ powerful actions on bronchitis and whooping cough, it’s great in blends to ease the congestion and open airways. Try the following. 1-ounce unscented lotion or cream 2 drops of Oregano Origanum vulgare 8 drops Ravintsara Cinnamomum camphora ct. 1,8 cineole 6 drops Eucalyptus Eucalyptus globulus 4 drops Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis ct. 1,8 cineole This is for adult use only. Apply to chest and neck area 3-4 times a day, especially before bed. 13. Nervous disorders Many are unaware of the effects of Oregano on the nervous system. Oregano herb can be used to make a very stimulating nerve tonic. It eases noises in ears, migraines, facial tics, has a profound effect on psychopathic conditions. Oregano offers a feeling of well-being. (8) 14. Treating Genito-Urinary Issues During that time of the month, cramps can be very painful. Oregano essential oils assists with easing cramps. Whether this is due to the actions of a diuretic is still unknown. But much relief can be achieved with Oregano. Try applying the following blend to your lower abdominal area and lower back to combat menstrual aches and pains. Menstrual Spasmodic Pain *1-ounce Kpangnan carrier oil 2 drops Oregano Origanum Vulgare 3 drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia 3 drops Peppermint Mentha x piperita 3 drops Nutmeg Mystistica fragrans 3 drops Cypress Cupressus semperviren *Kpangnan (pronounced Pawnya) has a slight warming effect on the skin. Studies have found that Kpangnan contains a high amount of stigmasterol, an unsaturated plant sterol that contains anti- inflammatory and pain-relieving agents. Organic and unrefined will give you the best butter for skin preparations. As soon as it is refined it changes its wonderful skin healing properties. The butter should be hard and yellow. Was this list helpful to you? I was amazed when I found out about all of the awesome uses of oregano essential oil. It has been used medicinally for thousands of years. Ancient Greeks and Romans used it extensively. It is now being explored scientifically in controlled clinical studies to determine exactly how effective it really is and how it should be used. I am always glad to read about natural, safe and effective alternatives to modern medicines. Please leave a comment to let me know if this list helped and tell me about your own personal experiences with oregano essential oil. We can all contribute to a more complete list of its benefits. Be sure to share, too, so that others can learn about all of this oil’s natural benefits. References: Tisserand, R. and Young, R. • Aromatherapy and "Hip" Baths

What is a Sitz bath? A Sitz bath, from the German word ‘zitzen’, meaning to sit, is often referred to as a hip bath. In the mid 1850’s, a sitz tub was made out of tin and lined in “linen damask, think bird’s eye diaper, or white huckaback” towels to protect the skin from the tin’s heat. The water was warmed by the tub. Depending on why and the skin condition, in the past bathing experts would suggest vigorous toweling after the bath to promote blood circulation and to remove dry skin or, if sores or lesions existed, then air drying was recommended. Although created for medical purposes, people found that they really enjoyed it at leisure as well. Although to date there is no evidence that a warm bath will ease pain and discomfort, personal experience has proven otherwise. Despite this lack of evidence, physicians often recommend the use of a warm bath to ease discomfort. Skin healing essential oils, when used properly, can also help ease symptoms and lessen the healing time. Here, I will explain how these can also be beneficial in your bath. Today, a bath can be done by obtaining a kit from a medical supply, pharmacy or online that fits right over the toilet seat that comes with a cord and bag to disperse the warm water. Some physicians may recommend the use of Domeboro powder, depending on a patient’s condition. These kits include the powder. However, it can be purchased separately. The powder is the advanced version of Burow’s Solution, developed by plastic surgeon and anatomist named Karl August Burow. He created it to relieve the itching and inflammation of minor skin irritations. Dr. Burow s’ wound healing techniques are still in wide use today. You may choose to use your bath, since sitting in your tub in warm water may bring greater relief. This will require the tub is thoroughly cleansed and bacteria free. A sitz bath is a great way to cleanse and relieve discomfort, pain or itching of the perineum, which is the space between the rectum and the vulva or scrotum. Whether recuperating from surgery, hemorrhoids, or various other discomforts, a sitz bath can bring a huge comfort. If you choose to use essential oils, taking steps to use them safely ensures that you don’t add to your discomfort. Prior to adding to your water, essential oils should be added to a carrier (fixed) oil and into the powder or if using Epsom salts, added to the salt. This ensures proper dispersmant of the essential oils, so they don’t adhere to any skin, especially tender skin. If you’ve recently had surgery, birth or other open wounds, consult with your physician before immersing or cleansing the area with water with or without essential oils. When Should I Take One? Anytime you want to ease pain or discomfort, inflammation or speed up healing, soaking in the warm water will increase blood flow to the area, easing discomfort and increasing your healing. There may be situations where a sitz bath may not heal your condition, but it can bring great relief to many associated symptoms. Conditions that it may help include anal fissure, constipation or diarrhea, soreness, inflammation and more. This may be helpful with young children who experience constipation and may be suggested by your pediatrician. How do I make a Sitz bath? Either follow the directions of your kit or do your bath in the tub. Use enough water to cover the pelvis and abdominal area. The water temperature should be warm and comfortable. Depending on why you are doing it, you can soak up to three times a day for about 15-20 minutes or as you or per your physicians instructions. Avoid using any added soaps or bubble bath products. These products can add to your discomfort by adding synthetic ingredients into the water. Some physicians may prescribe an additive and that is fine. Or they may suggest Epsom salts. Remember to check your water temperature prior to entering. It should be comfortable to the touch. Taking a sitz bath in the bathtub If you’re taking a sitz bath in the bathtub, take extra steps to cleanse your tub thoroughly to avoid any possible bacteria. I like using White Distilled Vinegar. It’s very effective with destroying most bacteria. Vinegar is a weak form of acetic acid, the pH of which is too strong for most germs to survive and why it’s very effective for cleaning the home. Using undiluted vinegar, clean your tub and rinse. Next, fill the tub with 3 to 4 inches of water. The water should be warm. You can test the temperature of the water until you’ve found a comfortable temperature Add any essential oils (diluted as mentioned) or other items prescribed or recommended by your doctor, to the bath. Carefully step into your tub and situate yourself so you are covered, with knees slightly bent. Soak your perineum for 15 to 20 minutes. When you get out of the bathtub, either air dry or gently pat yourself dry with a clean soft white towel, avoiding any sore areas. How To Use Essential Oils-Step by Step Like the parent plant, essentials oils have many therapeutic properties, varying from oil to oil. Essential oils are made of tiny molecules that can cross the blood brain barrier and enter our blood stream, therapeutically going to work. Essential oils consist of chemical families and within those families, are components called constituents. Each component has its own therapeutic property, although the total chemical makeup contributes to the power of each oil. Olive oil, Jojoba oil, Rose hip, Pomegranate, Grape seed and more are great choices. This protects the skin; however, it still must be added to Epsom salts or the powder as mentioned above to disperse into the water properly. Combine 1-5 drops of your essential oil or blend into ½ ounce (1 tablespoon) of carrier of choice. For a regular size tub, you could use 5-20 drops per ½ ounce (1 tablespoon). Add to 1 cup of Epsom salts or powder above. The oils I’ve chosen for the various issues can be found in the provided references at the end of the article. There are other oils that may have the same therapeutic properties. Some oils come with further safety notes. If unsure, please email Rehne Burge at rehnaburge3@gmail.com for further assistance Cystitis: Bergamot Citrus bergamia Cedarwood Juniperus virginiana Eucalyptus Eucalyptus globulus German Chamomile Matricaria recutita Juniper berry Juniperus communis Lavender Lavendula angustifolia Sandalwood Santalum album Constipation: Black pepper Piper nigrum Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis ct camphor Fennel Foeniculum vulgare Sweet Marjoram Origanum majorana Rose absolute Rosa x damascena Hemorrhoids: Cypress Cupressus sempervirens Frankincense Boswellia carterii Juniper berry Juniperus communis Myrrh Commiphora myrrha Lavender Lavendula angustifolia Herpes: Bergamot Citrus bergamia Eucalyptus Eucalyptus Globulus Roman Chamomile Anthemis nobilis German Chamomile Matricaria recutita Geranium Pelargonium x asperum Lemon Citrus limon Impotence: Clary Salvia sclarea Jasmine absolute Jasminum officinale Niaouli Melaleuca quinquenervia Patchouli Pogostemon cablin Rose absolute Rosa damascena Thyme Thymus vulgaris ct. linalool Ylang-Ylang Cananga odorata var. genuina Inflammation: Bergamot Citrus bergamia Copaiba balsam Copaifera officinalis Cypress Cupressus sempervirens Frankincense Boswellia carterii Helichrysum Helichrysum Italicum Juniper Berry Juniperus communis Scotch Pine Pinus sylvestris Incontinence (Enuresis) Cypress Cupressus sempervirens Muscle Pain: Lavender Lavendula angustifolia Bergamot Citrus bergamia Roman Chamomile Anthemis nobilis Eucalyptus Eucalyptus globulus Geranium Pelargonium graveolens Sweet Marjoram Origanum officinalis Peppermint Mentha piperita Menstruation (Ovarian discomfort) Basil ct.
